Miss Tommie Miller left yester day to resume her studies at the New York conservatory of music. . Messrs. Johnston and Malone speak at the court house to-day. Let eyerybdfTy attend and hear them. ' Senator Ebbs gave us a pleasant call yesterday. He is cheerful, and feels fully able to pull the sly Fox from the fence corner. Has not Mr. Pearson the moral courage to say whom he will vote for, for Senate, or for the supreme or superior court bench? It seems not . " , Oai young fVintl Clydo West leaves to-day for Kentucky where he will attend school. Study hard, my boy, you will need all tle learn ing you can get after awhile. Miss Annie Freck, daughter oi our townsman, A. Freck Esq , has gone to New York city to spnd some time with relatives. A gentleman just in from Yancey tells' he has been over a large por tion of the county recently, and .he had not found but one man who wanted to vote for. Malone, and lie was a woman? Hurrah for the Flopdoodle ! One might infer Irom reading many of our religious journals that money was one of the vital objects of religious organizations and labors, judging from the urgent irequency with, which the "paying up" feature is presented. Will Mr. Peaison support Mr. Fox, republican, or Mr. Ebbs, dem ocrat, for the Senate ? Will Mr. Pearson support Mr. Lusk for the supreme court bench? Will Mr. Pearson vote for Mr. Cummings against Mr. Merrimon ? We dare him to say so. , Good new3 comes to us from all portions of this county and district, regarding the political outlook. Our democratic friends have only to re main true to their,n:anhood,to their priciples,to their patriotism.to their State, to their fidelity to their own race and blood in the State, to again meet the enemy of all, even with their new 'leaders,' and rout him as before. But, all must work. Work, from now until the day of election should be our motto, and triumpant success is assured. Tom Johnston To-day. - Let a rousing crowd greet Messrs. Johnston and Malone, congrcFsinnal candidates, at.the court hoi.se to day, and listen to the discussion. It is very interesting, and all who go will enjoy it, except Maj. Malone and his friends. The tenacity with which people abide by their early faith in Ayer's Sarsapa rilla can only be explained by the fact that it is best blood medicine ever used, and is not approached in excellence by anyjpandidate for public favor. t7. ADDRESS OF GRAND MASTER WORKMAN POWDERLY. In response to the speech of welcome by Gov. Lee, Mr. Powder! y begun by re turning thanks for the reception t! ey had met with, and pleasantly' allur.ed to the fame of Southern hospitality. The fight in which the Knights Of Labor are engaged, he said, is not a war of labor against capital, but a war. in which the manhood of the American laborer is fighting for recognition. In this war it must be determined which shall rule, monopoly or the American people gold or mannood. Popular disregard or poli tical duty, and tolerated and continued political corruption, will weaken, our erovernment ana destroy oar liberties, for the worm cad eat its way through the oak which storm or tempest could not bend, and political dishonesty will strike where lightning could not reach. If this land was worthy that brave men should die for it, it ia at least worthy that un selfish, thoughtful men should live and work in grand devotion-to tho ideas ol real, true Democracy. 7We come here not alone to settle a question of dispute in regard to wages or hours of labor, we come hgre partly to study and learn some lessons of head and heart in practical citizenship. To rescue the toiler from the grasp of the selJsh is a work worthy of the noblest and best of our race. It is to the accomplishment of that grand object that every Knight of Labor should bend his every energy. Lack of success or encouragement must not dishearten, defection in friends, or fancied friends, must not turn him aside from his pur pose, love of ease must not prevent him irom wormng. The question is asked. "Whv havevou such an organization as the knights of Labor ?" We are Knights of Labor be cause we believe that the Declaration of independence means something more than mere words and beautiful sentences. We are Kniehts of Labor because we be lieve that it ia wrong for an alien king to oppress the people and rob them. It is also wrong for any other man to oppress or roD nis lenow creatures. We are Knights of Labor because we believe "to whom beloncm the anil if. ia hia aitzin n - "'u, v. v.11 unto heaven." We are Knights of Labor Decause we oeneve mat the rights of the poorest, humblest man or woman of toil should stand forth more clearly and be treated with more of respect than privil eges conferred upon or stolen by the wealthiest in the nation. We are Knights of Labor because politicians and Dolitical parties have derided, degraded and de- oaucnea tne people, because they nave too often gained pewer through deception and fraud, and irrreturn for the confid ence reposed in them they have basely deserted the common people and knelt at the shrine of gold. We are Knights of Labor because we believe that law and order should prevail and that both should be founded in equity. We are Knights of Labor because we believe that the thief who steals a dollar is no worse than the thief who steals a railroad; that the burglar who breaks open a house or vault is no worse than the criminal who destroys or orders the destruction of the property of a railroad, or a telegraph company, and we believe that the same law ohonid raaotteut wiih firm, unshaken hand and punish both criminals accord ing to the magnitude of their f?mlt We believe that if it is wrong to steal a loaf oi bread, it is also wrong to steal land whereon grain was raised, from which bread was made, and if land was stolen according to a law made by dishonest time-serving politicians, we believe that law should be repealed and the land re stored to the people. We are Knights of Labor because we believe that if an article manufactured by the hand of the American laoorer is worthy of protection from foreign competition, that hand, whose skill lends value to the article should be protected, and we have de termined to protect our labor independ ent of politicians and of political parties. The slavery that died twenty years ago was terrible, but bad a3 it was it never developed a millionaire, while the new slavery, which now reaches out with a far stronger hand than the old, has developed hundreds of them. 1 be lash was stricken from the hand of the slave-owner over twenty-five years a0, and it must be taken from the hand of the new slave-owner as well. The monopolist of to-day is more dangerous than the slave-owner of the past. Mono poly takes land from people in million acre plots; it sends its agents abroad and brings hordes of uneducated, desperate men to this country: it imports ignorance and scatters it broadcast throughout the land, it, and it alone, is responsible fox every manifestation of anarchy that our country has witnessed. All "men may not bo willing to admit that this state ment is true, but when monopoly dies no more Anarchists will be born unto this country, for anarchy is the legitimate child of monopoly. While I condemn and denounce the deeds of violence com mitted in the name of labor during the present year, I am proud to say that the rvnignis oi .Labor, as an organization, are not in any way responsible for such conduct. He is a true Knight of Labor who, with one hand clutches anarchy by the throat and with the other strangles monopoly. - "Blood-food" - is the suggestive name often given to Ayers' Sarsaparilla, be cause of its blood-enriching qualities. t7- A Fink Pbopebty fob Sale.
