The vote in Madison is about the samerepublicanmajority from 250 to 300. Dr. Queen will be absent from his of fice for two days beginning with to-day, on professional business. We have not even elected a Coroner, we mean we democrats, to sit on our case I Hark from the tombs a doleful sound 1 A large number of our Western friends are in attendance upon the federal court. We hope all will call on us. Messrs. Redwood & Co. have their beautiful emporium crowded daily. Their splendid stocks of eoods will attract the. people. We are pleased to see our towns man, Mr. W. B. Gwyn, again riding out Hope to see mm actively at business again soon. . Maj. Malone's majority in this county is 181. We have been una ble, at this hour, to eet the full re ports from townships. The entire Democratic Judicial ticket la elected by a' very large ma- lontr.- lion. J. a. Alernmon is our next Judge. Thank God for this. Our Tobacco Warehouses will soon be ready for- a big business. Bring in Tyour crops. Buyers are plentifol,'with very largely increased orders. Now for business! The Citizen is ready to continue its usual, efforts in behalf of the material interests of pur section, regardless of politics or other disappointments. The idea of fourteen or fifteen hundred democrats in thia county remaining away from the polls is simply a disgraceful surrender to the republicans and their new ally, Mr. Pearson. . - - Our friends in various counties in this district have treated us with indifference so far as sending news is concerned. We have neither re ceived, or been able to obtain, news from the counties West or immedi ately East of us. . . The Federal Court meets to-day. The crowd begun to arrive yester day, and the city begun to .assume a very lively appearance. We hope all will call at the Citizen office and tell us all the Dad news they can. We have hadBome good news, but we are now hunting for bad news. Mr. Lyons, secretary and treas urer of the Association for the Pre vention cf Cruelty to Animals, re quests all members to call and de posit their dues, and also urgently invites all who are interested in so good a cause to call and join; Such an association is much needed, and we wish it much success. The Knights of Labor were the balance ox power, and Mr, Nichols, being a member, received most of that vote. Nichols maion ty will be from 500 to 1000, a heavy democratic loss. Mr. Anderson, of Clay, is reported elected to the Senate, but this needs confirmation. Virginia Election. ?V '.. " Eichmond. Va, Nov. 3rd, 11 a, in. I It is confidently asaertad this morn ing that Yost, the Republican candidate in the ICth District is elected by from 1,000 to 1,500" majority. The District elected a Democrat in 1884 by 1,187 maj ority. This makes a total gain in the State for the Republicans of two Con gressmen, with the 1st, Cth and 9th Dis tricts.in donbt. All three of these were carried by the Democrats in 1884. The probabilities are that the Republicans carry the 9th District, and may carry the 1st. In the 6th the vote is very close, and so far no just estimate can be made. From the Raleigh District. Heavy Democratic sLosses. Caleigh, Noy. 3rd, 1 p. m. A private telegram from Nashville confirms the information given elsewhere of the election of R. L. Taylor as Gov ernor of Tennessee by a majority of zo,uuo. ine news gives as much pleasure u ere S9 m . ennessee. Our Candidates for the House. In the defeat of these gentlemen, while we regret their and our dis appointment, we cannot approach them with words of sympathy. Their conduct has been so manly. and their canvass so able, that we point to them with pride rather than mortification. They stand before the Democratic party eleva ted, not humiliated, by their defeat. 1. A. uudger and Johnstone Jones have lost the immediate fruits of victory. They have gained the ad miration of their party for their gal lant work, and stand undiminished in the confidence of those who stood by them in the bitter fight. How We Feel. - We can think of no better illus tration of our feelings over the elec tion than that of an anecdote which was told on Bishop General Polk of the Confederate army. Gen. Polk's army occupied, and had fortified, Columbus, Ky., on the Mississippi river. To this point the govern ment sent a very heavy and a long cannon, which used long shells. The Federals approached this point on the Missouri side of the river and entrenched themselves just be yond the reach of ordinary ordi nance, but this new piece was ex pected to carry shells and dismay into their encampment. The day arrived for its fall test, 'and some "lamp-posts ' as they were called, were successfully thrown into the camp of the, enemy, and caused them to move out rapidly. While thus testing the cannon it exploded. scattering the gunners in all direc tions. Uen'l Polk was standing a short distance off, and one of the gunners was thrown at his feet The sulphurous smoke was so dense that one could not- see his ;hand before him. The man at the feet of the General, in reaching around, and leeling able to get up on his ailfours, and catching hold of -the General's legs, looked up and quiet ly said, "Aint this hell?" The Bishop-General looked down, and with a suggestive smile replied, "It smells like it" And that is iust about the wav our election of Tuesday smells to us. ' ."' ... .
