ASHEVILLE N. C Read Mr. T. S. Morriaon'B impor tant statement in sin other column. It will be worth your while to do so. Heavy tobacco breaks at all the warehouses yesterday, and excel lent prices were maintained through out. Col. and Mrs. A. T. Davidson will leave in a short while for Texas, to spend the winter with relatives in the Lone btar btate. We ask the prayerful attention of the street commissioners to the con dition of "Woodfin street immediately fronting the old College building. The mud-hole there is almost impass able. A few loads of rock and a lit t'e drainage will relieve the nuisance. A similar spot grieves the eye just above the court square. We call at tention to these two places especially. We wero pleased to meet yester day Mr. L, W. Beach, of Gewanda N. Y., who is visiting this -city for tht winter, stopping at 76 Haywood street. He is here for pleasure, health and business. Mr, li. is cor respondent iortheCataraugus county Gazette, Uowanda, W. Y. We trust he may be improved by his itay, and may find much which will in spire his pen. Maj. W. Pinkney Mason who has been doing good educational work in Asheville during the past year in connection with Mr. S. F. Venable, and latterly by himself, leaves us to-morrow, we regret to say, lor Frederick, Md., where he has an inviting offer. Maj. Mason has made many friends here, and his depature is the occasion of much regret. Hitherto it has been customary for winter visitors coming to Asheville for the benefit of climate, cither to take up their abode at the hotels or in private boarding houses. These this winter, are more largely patronized than ever. Besides these, there are numbers who bring their fawilies and enter upon home life by renting hous es. This is a pleasant feature, a? feel, in their own hemes, more like citizens than when otherwise isolated. We thank the News Observer for its kind and just opinion of Asheville as expressed in the somewhat doubting remark of the Danville Register. The confidence put by the J7ews-Ob$etv-er in the earnest purpose of Asheville ia.uot noifipliwArl. With, the excep tion of the street railway, a yet un completed project, but now in fair way of realization, nothing yet has been undertaken here that has not been successfully accomplished, and that quietly and without ostentation. The improvement of the streets, the introduction of water supply and its wide diffusion through the city, the adoption on a liberal scale of two sys tems cf electric lighting, the applica tion, in addition, of the gas light, the use of the telephone system, not to speak of manufacturers and the large expansion of the tobacco business jus tifies the News-Observer in the belief that when the people of Asheville re solve to hold a tobacco fair, thev will have one. Undertaken it will not e nd in talk. The following is from the Nezvs Observer : "Asheville is talking about having a tobacco fir next year. Danville Register." And when that town talks it gener ally means action, vigorous action in the near future. Danville has reason to look to her laurels, particularly in view of the fact that there are other North Carolina towns as well as Asheville which are approaching her rapidly if not surpassing her as to bacco marts Durham, for instance, Raleigh, Oxford, Henderson, Reids ville, Winston, etc. There is walk ing ahead for Danville, and the beau ty of it is that it is all a friendly, le gitimate business rivalry which is go ing to do great good to all the people of Virginia and North Carohno sis ter States and thoroughly sisterly in the good will they have for each other. Messrs. Nichols and Gudqer. . These gentlemen, real estate agents invite the attention of the public to an important announce ment in another column. Thes gentlemen need no endorsement, at our hands as they are well knowo as among our most reliable and pru dent and successful business men See their announcement and .give them a call. Off for Raleigh. Messrs. Lusk, Harkins, and rhaps others, leave for Raleigh to-day to attend the two Republican State Executive Committees. Now look ut for devil ment. Especial Attention Is invited to the large array of popular remedies to be found at l'el ham's Phar macy, near tbe post office. It is a rule with this house to keep any thing that is wanted in the drug line, provided it has any merits. We edyise our fritiids in the country that when in want of any medicines to try Pelham's Drug Store. They fill physicians' prescriptions at low prices. The quality of their goods is un excelled. M. Tobaooo Sales. The sales of leaf tobacco were very good yesterday. All the warehouses were full and the prices well sustained. Owing to the pressure of business tbe proprietors of the warehous s failed to send in full leports of the sales. The tobscto sold was of a very fair quality much of a selling at from $30 to M per hundred pounds and some as high as $61. The farmers were well satisfied with the pric?a realized. To day tht breaks will be much heavier, so much so that it will be impossible for all that is on hand to be sold in one day. There are already 200 or 300 wagon loads, besides large shipments already at the various ware houses and perhaps 100 .more wagon loads will be in early this morning. ?-uch a rush of the leaf on the market jast now is given our tobacconists plenty of exer cise and causes a pleasant smile to play over tlie face of the merchants. Misses Lelia Roberta and Gilbert. The progress frech day will be pub lished in order. A Slggestion. We have a large number of visin tois in Ashfville who have come to spend the winter. Some of these keep themselvea so closely housed, in very hot rooms, avoiding either the lreoh air or exercise, that but little improvement their condition is experienced, and tliev unjustly think the climate fails of its duty. In all such cases it does fail of its opportunity to do them cjod, but because of theinseives. With com fortable wraps, scarcely a day oc curs, certainly has not occurred so far this winter, when exercise out" doors v.ould not only be comforta ble but very healthful. The exper ience of Mr. Fechhe imer and others who i'o'lrT7 such examples, illus trate thoroughly our point. Rea sonable exercise will make the freih blood go bounding through the en tire system, heating it up, while it expands and invigorates the lungs, the organism most readily and seri ously affected by constant in door life. A word to the wise, and all health-seekers should be wise in such matters, ought to be sufficient. If all who are not absolutely bed ridden would f illow this advice they would soon realize the benefits and blessings of our naturally superior climate. a Stop that cough, by the use of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral the bes specific ever known for all diseases of the throat and lungs.
