7 in ASHEV1LLE CITIZEN. K. M. FURMAN, ) JORDAN STONE, J. 1). CAMERON, ) EDITOB5. THURSDAY MORNING, JAN. 19, 18s8 The Clyde Register says the Citi zen ia "considerably exercised for fear Mr. Pearionwill smash pome body for Congress and not give some old line republican a chance." No, we are not exercised about it, but could not help note the fact that the republican of thi-5 district, with all their boasting, concede they cor. not carry the district on a straight, fair fight, with a straight-forward republican, aud could only hope to do so through the use of treachtry and deception, in the person of their candidate and in his methods The ringsteri of the republicans who thiiik they own the rank and file of that prty may sacrifice their prin ciples and attempt thi., hut the honest turn of that party will re buke the effort this year as they have done heretofore. WRONG AGAIN. rns .Clyds Register U ;doing its woJk brv7.y as a representative republican organ As an illustra tion the following ; "Not only this, htr, ,t democratic railroad commission, through Gbh. Bragg, a noble Confederate general, gives the negro all the social immu nities in railroad travel, that the ino3t ultra of tha republican party ever asked in consrreM twelve years ago." Now the ''democratic railroad commission" did nothing of the sort, any more than Cleveland h id Fred Douglas at a social entertain ment, a falsehood the republican orgau hopes to repeat until they may believe it to he a. truth. Tfie commission did ray that when a railroad company sold a negro a first-class ticket he must be given as good accomodations as weregiv en first class passengers, but that they, the negroes, might bs provided with racparate apartments. The re publican party twelve orfifieen years ago said the negro should have a right.f.o travel with the white peo ple in the same coaches, or stop at the same hotels with full equalit' of treatment with the white?, and the company or pro prietors: refusing should be punished. The party which the Register upholds said this, while the democratic commissioner eaid whale the negrnes should have good and comfortable accommodations in public conveyances, they might be furnished separate apartments Th Register will find that the white men of the South prefer the demo cratic idea. ON TO WILMINGTON. We are plesrsed to learn from the RaleigL correspondence of the : Ich raond Dispa'ch: "It may now be rgarded ; s i set tled fact that the Cape Fer and Yadkin Valley railway will he ex tended to Wilmington. President Julius A. Gray, of that road, ac cepts the proposition of the Wil mington commissioners to give $150,000 to secure thi. gre.itiy cirrd result. It is a matter . f sj.t c ia! importance to many ouuntifs of North Carolina, and to some in Vir ginia. It is especially important to the section northwest of Greensboro which this road is just, now devel oping. No road in the State has greater possibilities of usefulness rr euecers. It has already an assuied Virginia connection. Wilmingtoi has this year felt the impetus of trade, but it is only a foretaste o the prosperity sure to come to it. President Grayhas visited South port near Wilmington, to see its many advantages as a port." It is one of the possibilities tl.at when this road is extended to Ashe county, which will be during the next year, that, besides securing a connection in Virginia it w ill also extend through Mitchell and Yancey to As.heville. thus giving us another northern, as well as direct connec tion with Wilmington, Fayetteville and other North Carolina tow re. Senator Vance struck the keynote of the tax question in his speech in the Senate the other day. lie said the people of North Carolina favored, even demanded, a reduction in both systems of taxation, not only in the rate of taxation, but iu the methods of collection. The system of collect ing the internal revenue is an offence ; thie offense is certainly grea' ly en hanced by the fact that the revenue is no longer needed. But if it may be considered expedient, at least uu til the redaction of tariff t ixation snail develop its effects upon that source of ""revenue, to maintain the whiskey tax, then the mode of collec tion should be altered, and its drastic methods abolished. The tax on to bfpco and fruit brandies" should cer tainly go, and then, as the Senator ao strongly points out the t iriff du tie on the n ecessarics of life the articles which enter directly into the ronuToption of the poor people should b lessened or repealed, and the lux- uiies should bear the heavier burden. Tlit suggestion of Senator Vane is a conservative one, having for its ob ject the lessening of the burdens of the farmers and . the working people without doing injus tice to any. Of course he is opposed by the Republican party and their allies who wish to continue taxation to enrich the few at the expense of the p ople. The Republican party would rather have a few rich men in a community with all others hewers of wood and drawers of water for them, than to have the whole com munity comfortably well off, w th the fairest protection and opportunity for all or the greater number. We arc oppposed to the Republican idea Texas is rapidly becoming one of the largest wool producing sections of the country. A Texas Congress man has introduced abil; in Congress to remove the tariff tax from wool. The Texas farmers who att nded the National Wool Growers' Convention recently in session at Washington were unanimously opposed to any increase of the tariff on wool, de nial, ded by Ohio Republican mem- fters, buV urged that the tax be ta - en off altogether. Farmers, outside the political element among them, are beginning to open their eyes, South' ern farmers especially. Southern and Western farmers are beginning to realize the force of Calam ty Wei ler's illustration, that this republican tariff is a nig cow with her hind feet in New England and her fore feet in the Mississippi Valley, and that the smart New Englander is milking her while the Western and Southern farmer is only feeding her. The Re publican pariy wishes to keep up this state of th rigs, while the Democratic party wish the farmers aud consumers of the West and South to share some of the milk and not do all the feed' ing.
