We shall earnestly en measure. deavor to make the Daily Citizen - all that our city and its growing and energetic people would have it to be. In a short while we shall resume the Associated Presa dispatches from all pan." of the world. We trust our , efforts may be fully satisfactory to . mf our ..immunity andpatrons. (SHAPE CULTURE IN WESTERN CAROLINA. The Citizen Iritis to-day the i p'lblicaliou i f a series of articles fiirnistii-.l by Mr. J. (Solay, now a rtVidei.t of McDowell county, upon the ad i ptahility of Western Carolina to gran; iMilture and wine making Mr. (l lavia native of Switzer land. vi r.-are i upon the vineclad lull- --l' Unit pr.i:l v. 'iintry to which our-has been so ttutl.fully com pared, and is thoroughly acquainted wit'i every branch of the subject of which fit treats, and eveiy detail thereof. He travelled extensively throu :h this country after coming over, .lid finally selected a hom" in McDowell, und proceeded to show his faith by hid works in the plant ing of a vineyard. His success has been entirely sa istactory, so much so that lis regards grape culture and wine making the future money crops of our I'MMintainous st-stion. 'l he CITIZEN' is pieist-il lo lay before its lvii.ler? th: suggestions of competent an authority. HE SEWER QUESTION. Ti.e people ..! Asheville aie con flouted with a condition of affairs which demands their most serious and immediate consideration. The rapid growth of the city, with the rapid construction of buildings and improvements render a sewerage -ystem absolutely necessary to main- tain this growth by maintaining the healthfulness of the city. The im- . provements which have been niaoe necessarily cut oil' the natural drain- age which the open country before afforded, while the rapid increase of population has largely augmented the accumulations which not inly require lare sewer facilities but it' not promptly removed largely en hance the certainties of siennesy. T.ie exjtriince of the past two years ba- very s-criously impre?sed these facts upon our citizens and authoii ties, no much so that the fjrmer almost universally demand the im provement. In recognition of this necessity and demand the autbori ties have taken the only course of fered them. T ney cannot make the improvement without money; they cannot get this money without the authority of the people, given at the ballot box An election is therefore ordered, tube heid on the 3 1 day of April next, at which time the voters Cf - .-.hc.ville are to say whether or not they will authorize the construc tion of this absolutely necessary work. The eum proposed to be voted is sixty thousand dollars, to be represented by bonds of the city of Asheville to run thirty years from date of issue, to bear six per cent in terest. We have been shown by City Engineer Aston a very com plete map of the city, made after a very careful survey by Mr. E AV. Bowditch, of Boston, clearly defin ing a system lor a thorough sewer age of the city. The present plan to be authorized by the vote now pending, contemplates First, a sewer from court square ; dx .1 ir . . x own North Mam street to a point , in the creek below the residence of . Mr 1 v TA iir. d. J lieea. Sec nl. From court square down South Main street, to town branch, thence down town branch lo the French Broad river. Thi l. From corner of White Pine and Bjini street?, Northoast Aiheville, dow. While fine r-ireet to the ravine mar Mr. I'rmlry's ; : thenc following f.-iiil ravine across Charlotte it 1 I Bridge Kt reels and Merrinion nvniiM to a connection i with the North Main ctrert newt r. Fourth. From Walnut street j down Water Mieel to North Main I street sewer. Fifth, From I'atton avenue down Bailey street to connect with 6ewer , down town branch j This system will comprrhendne.tr l vvery section of the city. EstimateH for tliis- l:ice llie oosi tit about $50, 0(X. but lo provid for contingenciet", rock work not now foreseen, tc , the sum of sixty thousand dollr.rs is propeny asked lor. As these estimate! haye been very carefully prepared there can be no reasonable doubt that the amount proposed will accomplish the above specified work. To do that for the amount will be the very bett investment Asheville can pos- sibly make. We now have the best und cheapest water supply in the South, or elsewhere -o far as we can learn. The above work, for the amount proposed, will be fully equal 'in economy and beneficent results with the outlay lor our ex cellent waterworks. The topography ol Asheville presents advantages f r a complete sewersg-s system at most reasonable cost, rarely equaled. We cannot believe that our peo ple need argument to convince them of the necessity for favorably con sidering this proportion. It is a t ii i i i Lady Cook, formerly Tennie CUffin, has informed a Philadelphia reporter that her sister, Mrs. Martin (Victoria C. Woodhull), is about to found in Philadelphia a home for worrier, to be eal ed "Know Tin- Heff" an(i -,n which "the girls of ' America arc to be taught how they , should live and marry in order that the world mav be populated with men and women of healthy bodits and brains."
