T ! - f ' x It. ASHfclVILLK CITIZEN. K. M. FCRMAN. lORDAN STONE, J. l. CAMEKON, Editors. WED'SDAV MORNIXG. MAR. 7, 1883. THE GOVERNORSHIP. The Citizen is not lees concerned than other papers in the State that there should ! a proper selection of a Democratic candidate for Govern nor, but it has bten in no haste to indicate its prfferances. The clioici covers a wide field; and a toons; tlx many named there is not one we would not very earn estly sunnoit. But this section of Western North Carolina has no axe to grind. If it had, it would prefer to defer all action to the wisdom of the convention. The harmonious action of that body will be best se cured by the untrammeled voice of the delegates who go free to select from among the good names that will be presented, and making their choice, enter upon the campaign free from the acrimony sure to be engendered by the effort to main tain pledges previously-made, and declarations previously announced. The pledge the Citizen makes is that it will -support, unreservedly , cordially and laboriously whatever the convention resolves upon. TIMELY REMINDERS. The Democratic party of this State, of the whole South in fact, is under det-p obligation to the Raleigh Xcus-Observer of the 2nd for the ad mirable article, "A Word With Young Mm." It is a resume of the history of parties in the South 6ince the war up to the period when the back-bone of opprtfsion and un constitutional measures was broken, and the current of law, justice and fraternal relations resumed their course. f he article is addrtssedto young men, but with equal benefit might be read by the elders. The first had no experience of the dark and dis mal days of the transition period. They needed the information to give then warning of dangers they may incur by ignorance of the teachings of the past. Many of the others seem to have forgotten their experience altogether, jnd in the order, peace, prosperity and equal justice to all of the present, seem to regard the enjoyment of those things as their normal right and condition. They iorget the sacrifices at which these things were won; the fearful struggle by which the burden of oppression was thrown off; the mighty effort by which the spell of the carpet-bagger was broken ; the superhuman effort by which the white man resumed his rightful ascendancy in the affairs of the State. It seems to be forgotten that dur ing that baleful period the white men f the State were disfranchised, that the newly liberated freedmen were endowed with unlimited right of .-uffrage, that they were headed by a rapacious and vindictive horde of Northern adventurers, to whom were joinedjmanybad natives of the State eager to embrace the opportunity to advance their own political or personal fortunes; that in doing this taxation was laid upon people utterly impoverished by the results of the war, the credit of the State pledged to a burden it would require generations to lift, the evi dences of that credit squandered among those who had issued them," and the whole Stale disgraced at home and dishonored abroad by the very parties entrusted with the exercise of its sovereign power. In addition to this every present avail aMe resource was seized and dissi pated, railroad and bank stock, sold for what they would bring in the tnarKet, and the sacred school fund exchanged for worthless bonds, di vided as spoil among the shameless plunderers. Added to this the condition of the white population in the eastern countits was most deplorable. They were absolutely under negro domin ion; negro magistrates presided oyer their courts ; negro sheriffs and con stables executed the laws ; negro commissioners apportioned taxa tion; and to sustain them in all their nefarious practices, Republi can judges, some of infamous char acter, some of them carpet baggers, gat in the higher tribunals of justice se called. Every county was under the heel of despotism of the most odious kind, every county was loaded down with debt it bad no prospect ot paying, every county treasuiy was open to plunder at the hands of greedy and dishonest officials; aDd in i lie aggregate thevhole State waB in a pitiable condition of vas salage to an inferior race and to Jan unprincipled interloper. Bad as war was, it seemed prefer able to such peace. - In war, men were free, abiding the chances of battle ; in peace, they had become Blaves,.their hope of freedomresting nly on that manly resolution and In "omitable love of liberty that never desert'the Anglo SaxoD." In 1869-70 the Democrats under took the work of deliverance and accomplished it; and under their counsels and policy North Carolina has emerged from tha condition of ft down-trodden province into that of a sovereign Stale, richer, more populous, more prosperous than ever before. Forgetting all this.even those into whose soul the iron had entered seemed to have conspired to bring about a restoration of the evil d.-.ys At the last State election only the blunders of the opposition saved the State from complete Repub can ascendancv. With that would have come a Republican judi cian, the overthrow of the present system of county govern ment, and the restoration of negro domination where it would have been most disastrous. Then would have come the arrest of prosperity, the stoppage of public works, tht halt in enterprize, the paralysis to industry, and the blight to private fortune. Remembering that the principles ol the party are unchanged and that its purposes are indomitable. Democrats should look well to it that no local dissensions, no clash ing of personal ambition, no iirec oncilable rivalries shall interpost to foster the hopes of the republi cans, abundantly watchful and in dustrious to avail themselves of the errors of their enemy. The campaign is close at hand. Let Democrats be.on guard. At ah early iay we . 11 publish the excellent and instructive article of the News-Observer.
