The Republican convention to be held in this city on May 10th, will only elect delegates to the National Convention at Chicago, and the State Convention at Raleigh. The nomination of candidates for Con gress wi.l undoubtedly be post poned, and the contest for the nom ination will be a regular Kilkenny cat affair. A Large element will be opposed to the nomination of a straightout Republican and favor the endorsement of Mr. Richmond Pearson, Maj. Malone or some other independent, while another element known as the "moss-back" or slow growth Republicans will contend for the nomination of a straight-out, Simon-pure, unadulterated Radical, such as Col. Ludt, F. P. Axley, Ham Ewart, J. C. Pritchard, J W. Bowman, or some other of that va riety. At present Ewart and Bow man appear to be the favorites. It is thought that Mr. Pritchard's friends can be appeased by the promise of a place for him on the State ticket for Secretary of Stat -. Indications point to a "snowing under" of the moss backs ami the triumph of the other wing of the Republican pa.ty in this oongres sional district. The Waynesville Courier kindly speaks thus : The Daily Citizen comes to its much enlarged antl improved. "We are pleased to see this evidence of prosperity in our neighbor. The Citizen is a necessity to many of our people. We are Squelched, along with the Postmasters. The following, which we publish as received, squelched us, and is hard on the postmasters referred to. It is as follows : Asheyille N C 3-8-88 to the office of the Asheville Citizen I have Been hearing of you grumbling about the Burns ville mail Being late for the past week and I wish to Say to you the reason of it is the postemasters on the Rout dont Know thear Let ters, it takes tin minits at wea- verville to open the mail 15 at flat Creek 2a at btocsvme two hours at morgan Hill and the Balence of the Knight at Democrat yours truly li U Hell U Mail Uoy, Save Youit Timber. Mr. Hotchkiss, a Michigan ed itor, reterring to present South ern forest wealth, says : "It is better to hold on to your forests than to sacrifice them. Your timber which is now selling for fifteen to thirty cents a thou sand, stumpage, will in twenty five years be worth from sixty-five cents to $5. You hold the future timber supply of the country, and you owe a duty to yourselves and the nation to conserve your for ests and avoid ail useless ctestruc tion." This is a lesson often inculcated by the Citizen, but it is as yet little heeded. The time is com ing when its wisdom will be prov' en ; for the Northern lumberman will soon have to look . elsewhere for his supplies than in Wiscon sin and Michigan. Maine and Pennsylvania are already strip ped, and that process is going on with fearful rapidity in the States nrst named. Ihe time of the South comes next, and if our peo ple are not on gttard. our forests will be laid low in half a genera tion. There is no thought for the future with these lumbermen; and unfortunately there has been little, with the people of the South Either no value has been attach ed to the forest, or else a purpose to make all that could be got out of them in the lifetime of the owners. Mr. Hotchkiss gives good ad vice. Let it be heeded. . LATE NEWS BRIEFS. Mary Anderson is ill with cold. Young James Garfield has been admitted to the practice of law. MessrB.
