II IU LITTLE PISTOL
C. I. SJiggiiist SliootMat a Veil
man Car Conductor.
Yesterday afternoon, about 6.30
o'clock, a call was received by tel-
ophoiio at police headquarters
from the W. X. C. R. E, depot, in
this city, asking that officers be
sent there at once to arrest a man
who had tried to kill tho Pullman
conductor on the mail traiu going
'west.
Accordingly, officers Haikins
and Hamton, accompanied by
t hief W .Khlell, jumped 111 a car
ii;p.ro. and upon arriving at the
depot saw Higgins, pistol in hand,
making for the timber. Tho of
ficers save chase and were rapidly
gainiug upon Higgins when the
latter threw his weapon into a
thicket and redoubled his speed.
Officer Harkins followed him and
finally succeeded in running him
down. Uoth prisoner and officer
were nearlv exhausted after the
long run, and when help came in
the shape of officer Hampton,
who had stopped to secure the
pistol, the prisoner was put in a
carriage, brought up town and
locked up.
It seems that tne prisoner vas
drunk, and had repeatedly tried
to force his way into the drawing
room car, but had each time been
t jeeted by the conductor, whose
name we could not learn. After
Higgins had been put out of the
car several times he tried to strike
the conductor, who knocked him
down with a rock. Higgins jump
ed up, drew his pistol and tired
0110 or two shots at tho conductor
which fortunately missed him and
entered the -woodwork of the car
on the steps of which ho was
standing. The train then moved
oil' and Higgins hied the remain
ing cartridgiS into the hot:t of a
colored woman near by. which
terribly frightened the occupants.
Thoy ran out screaming ami it
was at this j mi c turn that the po
lice officers arrived.
Higgins inquired very particu
larly about bail when searched at
the 'station-house, and wanted to
know if he could have a hearing
at once, ami also whether or not
he would be sent to the county
jail. To all of these questions
Chief Wiiddell answered in the
negative, and the prisoner was
locked up until this morning when
lie will have a preliminary hear
ing before Mayor Harkins.
