The alarm was sounded a little af ter 12 yesterday m rning, and the glow that filled the Northern s-ky proved that a fire had already made destructive headway. The location of the fire turned out to be at the res idence of the Rev. Dr. CarrollPastor of the Second Baptist church, on Merrimon Avenue. Neighbors and others quicUy gathered, and the fur aiture of the lower floors was gotten out generally in good condition, but in the upper story was much mutilated or else abandoned to its fate. By the tim the fire department reached the 6pot, all the rear of the building was in full blaze ; and the flames had insinuated themselves all through the upper storv running under the roof. and between the cealing and plastered wall and the outside covering. A stream Of water was soon iu strong play ; and after a long and stubborn conflict the fire was extinguished. The East end of the house is at a charred ruin. The front shows little mark of the fire : but in fact 4tie flames had run through Ihe part of the building, and in much of which appears outward! be intact must be removed, damage to the house and fund is probably $2,000. There is an in surance of $2,000 on the house and of $500 on the furniture. The origin of the fire is unknown. It broke out in a room above the cook room occupied by a neg -o boy servant. He had left eai m the evening and was not present at the time of the fire. He had left his lamp and matches down stairs. The fire in the stove had been extinguished some aours. When the blaze of the fire flashed on Dr. Carroll, he ran up stairs to the room, snatching up a bucket of water from a shelf as he passed; when he opened the door, the boys' bed and the cealing overhead were in full blaze, and the fire beyond individual control. Our Fire Department It entirely a voluntary organiza tion, dependent upon the spirit of the young men for the arduous du ties to be performed and the liber ality of the municipal corporation for the supply ot apparatus. Un like a paid fire department, which proyides quarters for its men, and keeps them together ready for in stant emergency, our young men return to their homes when their day's business is ended, and they are scat ered over the wide area of the city.
