If XT X 7 1 v, Vf'.'- ... v y D A8HEVILLE CITIZEN. K. M. fUKMAN Nr5. l-H.IT-.l DN, j JORDAN BTO. J. i. CAMKKON TUESDAY MORNING. AFKIL 10, IMsS ANOTHER STREET KAIIjWAY PROPOSED. Inasmuch as all other proposi tions submitUd and contracts made to construct n street railway in this city have fail d. a party submitted a proposition Friday night asking theJprivileRc of constructing a line from the depot up Southeide or Cleveland Avenue to Church, up Church to Willow', via Willow and Water etreets to Patton Avenue and such other streets, i.lleys, etc., as liiay. hereafter beiigretd upon. It is stated this only contemplates the construction of a due from t he oepnt to cr mar the public Fqutire, whi e the eliartt-r confer.- the light ofex-tt-iitdoii. (,'apt. Atkinson ohjecti-d at the Tiiday night meeting to the grunting i I tliis charter witlmui -i.e r iiu'u t ;it-nt 1 1: at a system vm I irl.i Miinj; a large portion ofil.e city be im-orporated and rtquitid to be e I iblished ly p-mse Muted t'ni'e. ll.is i.tlt-m.-in tl i' ks c inpsMiY tun le inrM.iz-d t :'nr' to ti i, ai:d to that end bus ; ' i - I h meeting for to day at 11 o Mock, to be held in his office. If euch can be organize), tbe gentlemm w learn, who asked for the cimitrr Friday night will at once withdraw their j.roposition, and gladly ill t the other company. As U hVh company shall build and how rum -I shall be done at once, is a n.ntur for tbe authorities to consider, o be governed as they will be by the verv lie-t proposition submitted for the city in general. If the efiort to organize a company to construct a complete systam at once for tl e city fails, we can tee no good reason why one onenng to construct a 'me from the centre of the city to tbe depot, with privilege of ultrmate extension, should be refused. Tbe construction of a street railway in Asheviile has been discussed for some years, and several propositioi s have been submitted to the authori ties, and privileges granted, but, nothing done. If our people will do as they can well do,, organize and construct a system, we would prefer to see it done. It will pay the stockholders, as well as the city. But, if we cannot get all we want at once, we cannot concur in the suggestion to refuse thu con stjucti' n ol a part fiom the center of the city to the depot which when once established will compel at an e irlv date an extension to such portions of the city as amy re quire ufli facilitieF. We hope. liowevcr, that Capt. Atkinson's henie for the whole citv can be successful. We have one serious objection, however, to the charter presented Friday night, namely, the privilege of running the line on Church and Willow street?, we care n t what sort of motive power may be used. The relationship of tlle6e streets to several of our largest chur-lns and their painful narrownew, hhould prevent their use for m y cort of railroad purposes. Besides, lines on either Main street or Pat ton i:enue would be near mouph t ire burcb8 for all' practical pui-pose.-. We doubt whether sptcial advantaie in grade can be bad by tl-- u?e of Chuich and Willow streets, and altogether we hope these stnets will not be allowed to be encumbered. Otherwise, we hope our citizers Will ston establish a street rt ilway, if not lor all the city at once, for as much as is ossible now, with ulti mate arrangements for extent io i. BRAVE MES.
