ASHEVILLE CITIZEN. KM. HJKMAS, 1 JORDAN bToNE. J.Mini4 J.l). ,A.MKKUN, J WKU'DAY MOUSING. APRIL 11, lStS MAJ MAIiOXK'S PKOTKCTIY AHTlCIili We give space to Maj. V. II. Ma lone's article advocating the repub lican party :iid its nconopolistic principle of high protection. It occurs to us if it is cartfally read it will convince all if not only tie pernicious evils and objects of the protective tarifi but the dangerous designs of the republican party. It is the Major's upcn declaration of adherence to the republican party, and as such we piisuuic it is in tended to be accepted. The ttatcnient that Cl.iv ami Webster were protectionists in 1830 or 18.".5 aid ihertfore the prople now bhuiiid also be protectionists li;i about as much force in it, so far as application to the pre.-ciit ':. (iiibin ot a 11 airs i concern. i, sa ii.- ttatfimnt would be that Lecau.-e people used !t- pay twenty live ceiits tu semi a letter lrom ot.e e li tu. other tl ey should do so n w ami i.ul coiXi!a:.n. Coiiditu-isr-h:ivi; chant: d i-iiice "before the war'' atid a policy which circuniftas.Ct s might have justified then betmurs intolerable now. If there be : ny thin in Maj. Malone's argument tlie j eoule of a community ought to be satisfied with one railroad an' not permit another to be buiit adding totheir convenienceorcliea) fjcilities, because one can dothe woi k required and the extra or exor bitant charges it makes by virtue of its monopoly should be patently bourne by the people as a thing that is just to the company rath r than invite cpportunites for com petition. Maj. Malone says prt c tion has brought about such com petition at home that blankets ami such things as the people want ami must have are cheap enough; but it will be a very hard matter for him to C )ii vince the people that if by reduc ing taxation which they have to pay they can etill get them cheaper they ought not to do it. He says in one place, the "foreign manufacturer pays the tax" on blankets &c and not the consumer in this country, and in another the tax is eo heavy that but few foreign blankttscan come in; last year only S3,8S7 worth for over sixty million of people. Yet while no blankets came in, the 71 per cent ot tax was added to the CDst by the New England manulac tun r, and madrs higher than the same blanket could be bought lor elsewhere, and our own people, every poor man who bought a blanket paid that extra cost. Major Malone says this i right, th.-t the people out to be made to pay this heavy tax on blankets and other things because by so doing they make the manufacturers rich. Our people in Western Carolina have to sell their products at prices the con surner fixes; while they have to pay the pricey the Republican tariff tax ennbks the manufacturer to fix on his own wares. Our peo ple have no chance at al- they have to take what others say they will give, and yet have to pay what these same others say they shall give and Maj. Malone says this :s right. And the Republican party says this is light. Mr. Cleveland and Democracy say this is all one sided advantage hiid wrong give manufacturers protection enough to be just and fair between all the people, but no more, and rtduce taxation so the people will pay no more than is necessary to support tiie government. We have not space further to follow, to-day, Maj. Maloi.c in his new found Republic can vagaries. The Major has an upbH job before him to satisfy the jople. if thev do any thinking nt all, that they must submit to un necessary taxation and family ex penses in order that a few people may get rich while they ttruggle on under burdens Now when we talk of the advantages of education we mean the education of the whole man the moral as well as the mental and physical man. And it is education in this sense that has so greatly blessed the world, and not in any narrower sense. Any system of education which comprehends only the body and mind is radically de fective, for the reason that one de partment of genuine humanity is en tirely ignored, and that, too, the most important. We say the most important for the reason that the most important question relating to a man is not whether he thinks or acts, but whether he thinks and acts properly. Humanity or the world is not necessarily blessed when men are taught to think and act, but when they are taught to think and act rightly that is, righteously. Whether a man is a blessing or a curse to so ciety or to himself does not depend on his ability to think and act, but on his thinking and acting right eously. Raleigh Educator. Wlint Io You Want ?
