ASHEVILLE CITIZEN. K. M. KURMAN, JORDAN 8TONK, J. 1). CAMERON, - Khitoks. FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL '20, ISHS. THK KDITOIt OF THE BAI.TI l)Kl). MOltK "SI N" A telegraph bulletin spread to the public yesterday afternoon by she Sim office, announces the death of the venerable Mr. Abell of the Bal timore Sun which occurred yester day morning. The deceased was in his 82nd year. For mors than half a century the Baltimore Sun has been a house hold companion in the city in which it is published, and looked for far and wide throughout the United State?. It was an iuddalijjable news gatherer and singularly relia ble; and though not editorially dis tinguished, it had achieved a pro i nence of popularity and influence enjoyed by few journals hi the country. The Sun brought wealth to its proprietor, and Mr. Abel was the possessor of property to the amount of two or three million- of dollar?. The Sun was 1'oun lei! by Mr. Abell in May. 1S0S, and had been conducted continuously until his death. by hi m AXOTHKU MOIXTAIX i-:xt Kit- ntisK. The following from the Wilming ton Messenger indicates a movement in a section of remarkable beauty, great fertility, and admirable adap tability to certain industries. The Linville not Louvi'le. as the Messenger has it is a rivet re markable for its varied characteris tics and striking contrasts. Above the falls it runs through a flat val ley which spreads out, almost on the very top of the Blue Ridge to the breadth of a mile or more. At Col. Palmer's farm, the river, nearly a3 large as it is at its mouth, is only VI' feet below the cnrvimit r.( thp mnnntnin. Tlip val- , , , . i one bott'e lias been miractii-u:, ley is almost a natural meadow: at ; ner name is .Mrs Luther :'.. nil wcnU nil tlr rrrnssps rrannnd to ! w rite V." C 1 lamsii 1; i.' t.'r.., ., i i i cultivation Witn wonueriui auieuis. , The west side of the valley is bor- dered with gentle hills on which there is a grand and varied forest growth. The low hills on the east are covered with the only continu ous white pine growth we have seen in the mountains. At the falls, the peaceful scene changes to one of sublimity almost terrible. The wa ters suddenly make a plunge from the'smiling valley down into a dark and deep canyon. The first pitch of a hundred feet into the gorge is the last that is seen of the river for l .. :l rri, mnmtn n( ll... inenii ujijcs. mi; v. river is unapproachable; the can- von increases in depth until it U 1 . walled in bv perpendicular i.'reci- pices rising to a beight of from 1,'JOO to 1,500 feet. Just below the stupendous mass known as the Short-off, the pent up stream emerges lioni its imprison ment into the vallev of the Catawba, j l,c,-,oi ir. tc nnimi with ibnt : aiiU lljtriivi- iJ .v.- ...... .....v river resumes its first character a a clear, swift and beautiful mountain river whose sparkling current is ap proachable with facility. We are not familiar with the lo- cation of the site selected for a new town ; but we feel assured from our knowledge of the general features of the section that good judgment has been exercised; and that no long time will elapse efore the town of i Linville will bo known as the centre of industry, and also as a very lasci nating summer resort. The Messenger says : "The Linville Land, Manufactur ing and Mining Company was or ganized on the 1-tth inst. at Cran berrj', N. C, under the manage ment of the following officers: Don aid Mcltae, ot Wilmington, presi dent; S. T. Kelsy, of Highlands, vice president and general manager; C. E. Ricksecker, ot Hutchison, Kan., secretary, and Wallace llahn, of Cranberry, Thos. F. Parker, of Charleston, and II. W. Brundige, of Horton, Kan., directors. The object of the corporation is to build a town in the beautiful Linville Valley through which the well known river of that name Hows. The company haB purchased a large tract of land in the broad valley lying between the Blue Ridge on the west, and the majestic Grandfather and Grand-, mother mountains on the east about ten miles southeast of Cranberry. The track is remarkably well wa tered, and is covered with a fine forest ot various kinds of hardwood timber. The soil is rich and runs naturally into blue grass and white clover. The special features claimed by the company are the climate, water, scenery and altitude of about four thousand feet, which will give it prominence as a summer resort, and being in the iron district and within Jeasy reach of coal has ad vantages of manufacturing. The company haue laid out on an ex tensive scale and have been arrang ing preliminaries for more than a year, planning the town in the most approved manner with broad 6treet3 and extensive parks, with a view to making a town of which North Carolina may in the near future, be justly proud." ROSCOK COXKLIXC. Roscoe Conkling was born at Ahi bany on October 30, 1829. He re ceived an acaJemic education and afterwards studied law, and in 1843 entered the law office of Francis Keruan, afterward his colleague in the United Slates Senate. His actual political career began in 1858, when he was elected mayor of Utica. In November of the same yew he was sent as a republican to Congress and took his seat in lSo','. He was re-elected in WW. In 1SG2 he was defeated by his old lav; partner, Francis Keiiian, but the succeeding election he in turn de feated Kcrnan. His first important speech was in support of the four teenth amendment, lie opposed the generalship of McCIeihini: and Spaulding's Legal Tend-.-r act. It was in the House that the hi mous passage between himseit and Blaine, for whom he had a con tempt, occurred, and their antago nism was never reconciled. He was re-elected in .fcl', but in 1S67, before he took his seat, lie was chosen United States senator, and returned in ISToand 187'J. Mr. Cooklius suppoited drain's administration, and largely directed its general policy, fie w;-s instru mental in the passage of th:1 Ci- i! Rights bill and fa von d rt.sumpti-i:i of specie payments. At Cincinnati in l7i' Mr. Conk ling received ninety-three votes for the republican nomination i'-t Pres ident.
