r 7 s ASUEVlLLH CITIZEN. U. V.. riK.MAN, I JOr.lA. SiONE, VEDlTuuk J. I., t ANfckON, J Fi.IDAY UOCNIKG. MAY 18, 1868. Some rude fellow speaks of Carl Schurz as Collar 'n Shirtp. Ri-preeentutive Payson, of Illi uois, gives it as his opinion, based upon existing circumstance?, that Mr. Giesham will receive tin; Re publican nomination at Chicane. m Tbe New York State Deuit-crutio Convention was solid for Cleveland. The wbole country is solid fur him except a few; but then some folks would not be satisfied in Heaven. Mr. 1. C. Keren, a "strong friend of Mr. lilaiiuy' "officially" an nounces that Mr. li. will accept if nominated. The Citizen said as much upon reading his letter of declination. The committee on Privileges ami Elections, U. S. Senate, through its chaiiman Mr. Hoar, in the Turpic contested case, decided "that the Senate has no right given it to question the loyalty of election of members of State legislatures." This is law and sense, but of course Chan dler objected. The National Convention of the Equal Rights party met at Dts Moines, Iowa, Tuesday am nomi nated Mrs. JJelva Lnckwoml tor President, and Alfred II. Love, of Philadelphia, for Vice-President, with a low neck and short sit eye platform. Considerable bustle is anticipated when ttie Equal Rights party takes the field. "STEDMAX TO THK FROXT." The Wilmington Review says: "The time is rapidly approaching when the ie;resentatives of the Democratic patty will assemble in Raleigh to declare their choice for the nomination for Governor. We should be untrue to what we believe to be the best interests of the State if we fail to call attention to the necessity of placing before the peo ple a candidate, best selected to win a fight upon winch so much de pends. It is idle to deny that the contest in North Carolina will be serious, and if we have not a proper leader, doubtful. We have said it before and we say it again, that we nhould be ready to give up all the aspirations of the Cape Fear section, so utterly neglected and passed by; consent thcugh with great reluctance to see a man struck down as a sac rifice, who deserves so much from his party, if that parly's necessities demand it. But we can never re main silent and see him beaten for a ih mination to which he is fairly ntitled, and upon which in our opinion so much dependr-, without calling attention to his absolute availability and the great elements of strength he possesses. We be lieve Lt. Gov. Stedman to be by far the most available candidate for Governor, who can be brought he lore the people ol the State. We challenge investigation both as to private and political life. His rec ord is spotless. He has no explana tions to make, either to friend or foe, no defensive warfare to wage, but from the beginning to the end of the campaign he will, if nomi nated, ever be found carrying our flag to the front and neither asking or giving political quarter. We call upon every white man in the Stale who loves our great par'y to point to one single element of weakness in his candidacy, and we uause for a reply. He has never been connected with any isms, cr side issues, but would stand forth untrammeled as the exponent tf the political faith of our fathers. A soldie r with a stainless record fr m Bethel to Appomattox, no words but those of love and devoted affection have ever been heard from him for the memory of his dead comrades who fell so gloriously in the grtat struggle, and when you find si Confederate soldier with a sleerveless arm or a mangled body, ani politics is mentioned, his eyes will brighten and his speech quick en as, nine times out of ten, he will say: "I am for Stedman forever." As a public debater he has few equals within the limits of the en tire State, and both by nature, edu cation and experience, is eminently qualified to conduct the canvas which is soon commence. As a po litical organizer he stands conspic uously without a peer in Iorth Carolina. Whe.i you talk of great services rendered to the party, who ot all men have done so much and received bo little? For nearly twen ty years he has been conspicuous in eveiy political fight waged in this part of the State. Nominated for the office of Lieutenant Governor, one without profit in any way, he made a campaign which will long be remembered in the annals of our party. When he has been btruck down, not one word of complaint has ever fallen from his lips. The tempter has never entered his heart ; the enemy has never dared to whisper treason into his ear; and even those who dif fer with him bear glad testimony to his heroic fortitude and his sub lime faith in the principles of the democratic party. In the line of promotion, from a section, ignored for half a century, with a record wonderful for its purity, his nomi nation almost a necessity, shall such a man be sacrificed uselessly and without cause? We appeal to tha democrats of the great West to see that he has fair play. Of all the men of Eastern Carolina he has been your most pronounced, bold and open friend, eyer demanding and insisting that the whole inter nal revenue system should be abol ished. In this matter he has never counted the cost, but has defied all opposition, and demanded it as a matter of justice to the people of Western North Carolina. To the magnanimity and the generosity ot the people of that section, we pre sent his unbroken record of friend ship in their behalf. We rejoice to believe that the nomination of Lieut. Gov. Stedman can be prevented by no trade or combination. As can didate after candidate has been named, hi3 friends have still made good the fight ; their strength un shatteted and their columns un broken, the victory is alread' well nigh won, and we call upon the democrats in every county in the State not to throw it away by indif ference or neglect. Common jus tice, the necessities of the situation, and the welfare ot the part' and the State alike demand the nomina tion of Lieut. Gov. Cluis. M. Stedman. The Augusta (G;i.,) A'eivs 3ays: "An Associated Press dispatch, a few days ago, lrom Columbus, an nounced that arrangements had been perfected for a new departure among the southern cotton iu ills The new departure, it was stated, consists in that a company h d been organized, and a mill is to be erected for the exclusive manufac ture of seersuckers and ginghams; but according to the Mcssengir,ot Wil mington, North Carolina is several years ahead of Georgia in that direc tion. The Wilmington Cotton Mills and the mills at Durham have been making seersuckeis and ginghams for some time. The Wilmington mills operate six thousand spindles, and their goods aie a sp'iendid arti cleand find read1 sale everywhere. Only on Wednesday, fi'ty thousand yards of the seersucker goods were sold to a New Yotk house in one bill. So the Tar Heel State bears off the palm, and the Evening Nties tenders its congratulations and thanks the Messenger for this bit of interesting information. What Am To Io ? The symptoms of Biliousness are un happily but too well known. Thev differ in different individuals to some extent. A B'lious man is seldotn a breakfast eater. Too frequently, akis, lie lias an excellent appetite (r liquids but none for solid of a morning. His tonnue will hardly bear inspection at any time; il it is not w hite and furred, it is rotudi, at all events. The digestive system is wholly out of order and Diarrhea or Constipation may be a symptom or the two may alternate. There are often Hemorrhoids or even loss of blood. There may ' he fiiddinesa and often headache and aridity .or flatulence and tenderness in the pit of the stomach. To correct all this if not effect a care, try Green' Augu.it Flower, it costs but a trille and thousands attest i s efficacy. d&weowly New MilliDerv, dtf at Whitiock's.
