We j.ublis i the proceedings of the Democratic county conv; nti n held lor the county of Madison, at Mar shall, with the lemark that our friends of Madison, though in the minority, hold a stiff upper lip, and int' nd to make themselves felt in the coming campaign. This is the right spirit, and may impress itself on our Republican friends of Madi son, who are reasonable men, and not beyond the reach of conviction. But if they are, the other side is de- termined to din some democratic doctrine in their laws. Silver ami Silver Ilntc! Ware At cloKe prices. To-day is National Decoration day. We do not know how many Federal dead lie buried he;e. There is no National cemetery here. But we hope such graves as are here will receive the mournful honors from both sides, as has come to be the generous and Christian habit. Entities are buried in the grave. Both sides fought for what they be lieved to be light. They who died perished for their belief. That was honest. Let no one remember such as an enemy whether he wore the Blue or the Grav. Austin Alexander Brought Back this Morning. Several days ago Ellen Dean, a colored woman, living on Mr. Alonzo Rankin's place, in this city, discovered that she had been robbed of nearly $300. Suspicion was at once fastened ujion one Austin Al exander, also colored, as the perpe trator of the crime. A thorough search of the city by the police, to whom the matter had been reported, failed to disclose Alexander's where abouts, and telegrams containing de scription, charge, and instructions to hold if caught, were sent to peirhboring towns in South C'iro 'dnai. Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. Nothing was heard from theS3 telegrams until Monday night, when a telegram was re seived by Officer Smith, of this city, from the Chief of Police of Spartan burg, S. The Muip'nty Bullitt says: That' Cherokee is the most productive county in the State, the following will substantiate: Mrs. Sanford Ledford, who lives in the lower end of the county, has given birth to four bovs within the past twelve months. We can but echo the re mark we once heard a Georgian use after traveling- over these United States, viz: "Great guns, what a country I " A Chapd Hill letter says: A memorial services was held at the Alethodist Church last Sunday night in honor ot the late Dr. N II. The Concord 77m' savs : Con cord lias never improved more du ring any other two years of its his tory than it has in the p:ist two. Besides numerous elegant brick stores and private dwellings, we have had a factory built, with a cap ita! stock of $7,000, a bank with :i capital ot 50,000, a hotel comjia nv organized, to cost about 25,000 but the catalogue is too long, and we grow weary in enumerating. Concord is now one of the most piogrcssive business towns in North Carolina. Of all the incidents connected with the recent floods out West jier haps none was morn thrilling than that related ot the father who '"was on the levee working with other farmers when theembankment gave way. Mounting his horse lie had a mad race with the advancing wa ters for his home, where his three little children were sleeping. Reach ing tht re just as the water struck the house, he p'aced the children in a wagon and started for the bluffs. The rajudly advancing flood floated the wagon box from the wheels and two of the children were drowned, Johnston saving himself and his little daughter. The child is all he has left of a happy home and a farm of 200 acres." This pathetic stoiy from real life might furnish the theme for .1 companion jioem to Miss Ingelow's well known "High tide on the coast of Lincolnshire." The information respecting the conditio:-", of Gen. Sheridan contin ues unfavorable. Washington telegram of the 2Sth say: At 1:15 p. m., Dr. Matthews left the Sheridan residence. He re ported that there bus been no ma terial change in the General's con dition since the hist bulletin. t any rate there was no change for the better. He frequently dozed oft' inti a semi-wakeful sleeji, but it is not of a restful character. The ox ygen treatment is being continued at short intervals. The physician bulletin, timed Si.o but; not issued until 9:30, des cribes Gen. Sheridan's condition as much more favorable. Oedema of the legs has entirely disappeared and Gen.
