ASHEVlLLK CITIZEN. R. M. FURMAN, ) JORDAN STONE, -J. D. CAMERON, ) Editors. PEES iTXT-CTTMI.ri SAT'DAY MORNING. JUKE ?. 1888. NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC TICKET For President, GROVEB CLEVELAND, Of New York. For Vice-President, ALLAN O. THURSIAAf, Of Ohio. DEMOCRATIC STATE TICKET. . For Governor, DANIEIi O. FOWLE, OfWake. For Lieut-Governor, tiiomas si. noir. Of Alamance. For Secretary of State, WILLIAM L. SAUNDERS, OfOraDce. For Treasurer, DONALD W. BAIN, OfWake. For Auditor, GEO. W. SANDERLIN. Of Wayne. For Supt. of Public Instruction, SIDNEY M. FINGER, Of Catawba. For Attorney-General, THEO. F. DAVIDSON, Of Buncombe. For Judges of the Supreme Court, J. J. DAVIS, of Franklin, JAMES E. SHEPHERD, of Beaufort A. C. AVERY, of Burke. The National democratic plat form, like President Cleveland's message, presents "a condition, not a theory," tor the consideration of the American people. Cleveland and Thurman, Fowle and Holt! What a pride and a pleasure it ought to be to every North Carolinian to have the privi lege and exercise it of voting such a ticket It will sweep North Caro lina, we earnestly believe. A North Carolinian, who cannot decide for himself, wrote to the New York Herald, asking for ad vice. He wanted to know which party would do more for the whole country. The Herald begins at the bottom and brings along the answer in a complete way, and after giving good reasons, draws this conclusion, to which we say amen : "The success of the democratic party is therefore a national neces sity. Its failure under present cir cumstances would be a national calamity. It has fallen into some crave blunders why deny it? but its firm faith in the unity of the country is the salvation of the coun try. If it sometimes goes too far in the right direction we must still confess that this is better than go ing too iar in tne wrong direction. In treating tne South with the mag nanimity, and thus welding the broken bonds of a union that is to last for centuries, it does credit to the memory of the noble dead and carries to their legitimate results the victories won by our veterans lnose diea and these lougnt lor a union that should be imperishable. If, therefore, Republican sectional' ism would destroy the iruito of their labor it is fortunate for the people that tne democratic party nan dammed up the mad tide of hostility and adopted as its policy No North, No South. No EaFt, No West, the good of the whole without prejudice to any.' In presenting Mr. Thurman's name to the democratic convention Mr. Tarpey of California said: ' "When the racihe coast was en deavoring to retard Chinese immi gration : when it had decided that national legislation was necessary to accomplish the desired results; when the merits of the subject were not understood east of the Kocky Moun-. tains, Allan G. Thurman, then U. S. Senator, was the first to raise his voico in defense of those whose means of living were in danger and wLose homes were threatened with destruction. When the great rail road corporations evidenced an in tention to evade, the payment of their obligations to the government this great man prepared that re markable enactment known as the Thurman bill, by which the offend ing corporations were obliged to provide a sinking fund for the re demption of their promises. During the trying times of reconstruction Thurman was a central figure in the United States Senate in upholding the dignity and integrity of the constitution." Waves of party pas sion, lashed into fury by ill advised and jealous partisans, broke harm less upon his Leonine front and set tled back into calmness by the force oi bis logic and power of bis oratory. A ripe scholar, his disquisitions upon constitutional laws are master pieces of eloquence, the admiration of even bis political opponents." Protection of the West against Chinese immigration; protection ol the whole country against the Pa cific railroad robbers; defense cf the South against the infamous outrages of reconstruction; what more could the American people want in a can didate for their suffrages ? INTER-NATIONAL COPYRIGHT. We cannot see why Congress should hesitate to paes the Chase Breckinridre Inter-National copy light bill. We cannot see why the brain-work of the author should not have protection as well as the whiskey monopoly or the other op pressive monopolies and trust?. XOT TOO OLD. The Baltimore Sun well suggeste: ' "Mr. Thurman's ' age has been made an "Action to him. Hewill be 75 years oiNovember. But his health is gooo i 7e suffers from no orjranic disease, ana nia mma is as 8 Irong and clear as it ever was The vice-presidency entails upon thf incumbent no labor of great se verity, but if it did, the case .would be met by pointing to Bismarck, who bears the weight ot an empire on his shoulders in bis seventy fourth year, or to Gladstone, who lends the home rule opposition with great vigor in his seventy-ninth year." And the Rome (N. Y.) Sentinel responds: "The idea that Mr. Thnrman is too old ! Tbi3 will uot hold. The age of man, measured by his years, does not gauge his poweis. Mr. Thurman is vigorous. Many a younger man is a wieek beside him. It is the vanity of the 3 ounger gen eration that would seek to hand cap the older men by the figure of their years In every community tie worth of a vigorous o'.d ace is known. Cato learned Greek at eighty; Sophocles Wrote his grand CEdipus, and Seninoni cles Bore of the prize of verse from bis com peers When each bad numbered more than fouJscore years; And Theophrastus. at fourscore and ten Had but begun his Characters of Men. Chaucer, at Woodstock, with the niht . ingales At sixty wrote the Canterbury Tales. Goethe, at Weimar, toiling to the last, Completed Faust when eighty years were past. un.no. Allan U. Thurman is cot too old to be Vice-President of these United States." A NORTHERN MAN'S OPINION OF NORTH CAROLINA AND THE SOUTH. We copy the following from the St. Charles, Mich. Vidette: St. Charles, Mich., April 28, 1888, Editor Vidette : I thought 1 might interest your readers to know how I found things in North Caro lina while I was down there. It is one of the finest climates in the world. I was at Asheville severa days and at Hendersonyille and Brevard Had meetings at all ot them. I found the people pleasan kind and pleased to have people lrom the North come there. 1 r topped at the Grand Central Hotel It is kept in good order. The time has gone by to make the people North believe that a northern man can't talk in the South without be ing in danger of losing his life. It they had killed the "carpet bag gers" as fast as they went down there the bouth would be in a better shape. TLey run the States into debt all they could. They then came North and said a northern man was not safe in the South While they were robbing the South John Sherman was flaunting the "bloody shirt" to draw the atten tion of the people. Now he wants to be President. I would rather vote lor Jesse James, if he was alive. I talked to a great many colored men about being driven from the polls and they said it was not true, they could always vote as they saw nt. J here are more drunken men in one county in the North than in the State of North Carolina. I do not like the land there as well as I do in Myphigan. It is billy and rather rough.. Wages are very low; average hxr- cents a day on farm and a man board himself. I hear men say in the North that the laboring people are extravagant. How could that be on sixty cents a day, and that is about as well as common labor averages in the North, and John Sherman and his allies are the cause ot it all. He has caused more distress than any on man now living or whoever lived. and the day of reckoning is coming. B. Colvin. We will add that we met Mr, Col vin while in Asheville, and found him to be a very earnest, clever gentleman. He is, or has been, & republican, but now affiliates with the labor party of his State. He writes he hopes to again visit North Carolina and make his home here. While our lands are somewhat hilly, he will find them very productive if treated right, and, besides, he will find our climate healthy and salu brious.
