We congratulate the happy parents upon the distinction ol their worthy son. Our old friend W. R. Murray, Esq , of Busbee, was in the city yes terday. For a man who has reached his 84ih yenr, he is bpiightly and vigorous, and boasted that he could "thro-v down" the editor of the Cit izen, and "ye editor" wouldn't ac cept the wager. Our old friend really felt young, because Thurman, nearly ten years his junior, had beeja nominated lor Vice-President, and being 6uch a strong Cleveland and Thurman man, he really "feels his. oats." C MORNING, JUNE To Eoardinrr-Uouso Keepers.' . . We have received, and are in daily receipt of, letters asking for .printed lists - of the hotels and boarding houses of Asheville and vicinity." We send the Citizen at our own ex- pense, to all such enquirees, which of course, only shews those who have advertisements in the Cittzeh. We have noTfelt called upon to get up a full list of the -hotels and boarding houses, at our own expense, for dis tribution JJ inasmuch as we have cer tainly no more, if so much, interest in the matter than the managers of the houses themselves. We would sug gest j however, that the proprietors of the hotels and : boarding-houses get together and have printed jointly a card showug every person who is willing to . take boarders. Prices need not be named, but -visitors, -in seeking ;places, would at least tare he benefit of names to assist them in (JBa.lPiUasin.3sJt: ia the duty f every person "In "Asheville. te render every facility to visitors to secure sat isfacUry accommodation at the mini mum of labor, expense and trouble. It is the peculiar and financial duty of every person interested in a boarding-house or hotel to render such as sistance. By all uniting and having printed a card of hotels and boarding houses for public distribution, the cost of each would be small, and would absolutely attract people to the place, and facilitate their securing a satisfactory, to .themselves, place of stay ; and this economy of time, and satisfactory arrangement will be worth many thousands of dollars to Asheville. Now we appeal to our boarding-house keepers and hotel proprietors to unite for the Jcommon good. Really there is not enough ac commodations yet in Asheville for the crowd who would come here if proper efforts are made and informa. tion furnished. As matters stand, however, it is necessary for those who wish customers to meet and co-operate and furnish every inducement to bring people here. The City Council. The regular meeting of the city council was held at the Mayor's office Friday night. Present Mayor Harkins, Aldermen Miller, Fitzpatrick, Wolfe, TVestall, Scott and Rankin. Proceedings of last meeting read, corrected and approved. The graded school committee were before the board and submit ted their report for the half-year ending May 31, 1888. The report was accepted and filed. The com mittee urged upon the board the necessity of raising at least $12, 000 for school purposes for the coming: year. On motion the board decided to levy a tax suffi cient to make the appropriation. Maj. Jas. G. Martin, on behalf of the Asheville Telephone Co., was also before the board, and asked that exclusive right be granted to that corporation for the next five years of erecting tel ephone poles and wires in the city. A committee consisting of Aldermen Miller, "Westall and Scott was appointed to look into the matter and report at next meeting. Mr. R. R. Rawls was before the board, and asked that the water station on College street be re moved, as it was damaging and detrimental to the value of his property. Referred to the street committee. The city tax collector was au thorized to collect unpaid taxes by restraint, if necessary. J. P. Wingate and W. E. Mar tin were exempted from payment of corporation taxes on account of sickness. A number of bills were audited and ordered paid. Adjourned. The Wilmington Messenger says : A gentleman who came in yester day from the contractor's camps on the Cape Fear and Yadkin Val ley Railroad extension, states that about two miles of the toad have already been graded, and. that- the work is progressing very well. In about ten days it is contemplated to have about two hundred hands at work. It is stated that the road will not be ready lor the cross-ties before the last ol July of next year. THE CAMPAIGN. Kkdwooo & Co. i - . - 7 17 1888; A BIG SCAUR Caused by fho Appearance or a Huge Panther Near Avden. For some weeks; pas; the good people in the- neighborhood, of Arden have been more I or "j less scared up by., a rumor,. that has been rife there, to the. effect - that one or more huge panthers make their habitat not far from that lo cality. Friday afternoon r" Fw'6 young men, sons of Mr. : -Win. Vest, who live not very far from the French Broad river at Arden, and about ten miles south of this eity, plainly saw a monster pan ther while, passing through a for est on their way home. ' Catching sight of the young men the terri ble animal fled with -startling ra-r pity through the wobds and was soon lost to. sight. " These gentle men say there; is no doubt that it was 4- p&ntherf nd ii-lmgtlvwflj about eight feet. A few days prior to this occurrence it is re ported that Mr. - John Buckner, who lives in the Arden neighbor hood, caught a glimpse of some thing moving about in the under brush, near the same place where the animal was seen by the Vest boys, which he now believes to have been the veritable animal that has caused so much terror and consternation in his locality. Its distance from him, and the ra pidity with which it moved away from him at the time he first saw it, left him in doubt as to its iden tity. A number of people living' in the same section have of late seen the same animal, and not a few who have seen its tracks, pro nounce it to be a panther of unu sually large size. A reporter of the Citizen yes terday saw several gentlemen who live in and around Arden, and the statement above made was fully corroborated by each of them. The people are fearful of depre dations from this ferocious beast, whose habitat is thought to be in the wilds of Busbee mountain, not very far from the spot where the unwelcome stranger was seen by the Vests and others of late. Steps are being taken by the res idents in the neighborhood to or ganize a party to hunt and cap ture this beast possibly the last of his tribe in the wilds of West ern Carolina who thus intrudes itself upon the quiet people of Limestone township. Help the Boys. The Asheville Light Infantry is composed of young men of the city, the very flower of the community.. They have entered this organization not altogether for sport or recrea tion, for in being received into the the State organization, under the law, they have to assume strong ob ligations to the public. That they will perforin well and promptly all duties which may devolve upon them a soldiers no one can doubt. They tuould be encouraged and sustaine ! by the community. A former company proved its use fulness on several occasions, and, in fact, th" presence in Asheville of such organiz ition is a positive pub lic benefit and protection. The present company is composed al most eatirely ot young men who are employes in various pursuits, and have not the means with which to meet all expenses of the organiza tion, their uniforms, for instance. These have come, anJ the company lack about $200 or a little more to wards paying for them. Cannot the citizens of Asheville, whose live3 and property this company would be called upon to protect should a disturbance occur, make up this amount and give it to the boys? We are authorized by a citizen to start the fund with $5.00. Now who else will give? We bespeak the generous considera tion of our citizens in behalf of our soldier boys. We hope and expect to hear that this prop osition has met with a ready res ponse. All sums, in any amount, left at this office will be gladly ac knowledged through the columns of the Citizen. 1 Want Monev ! and I want it had. This may be a b'.unt, hard, cold, uncompromising statement, but it i-, fearfully true, and the truth may as well be admitted. To be still more frank I want your money, and I warn you I am taking steps to secure it without a moment's delay. To be candid about it I will say that at first I was greatly puzzled to kcow how I rould gain pos session, but a plan lias been dovised which will lead you to give it up cheerfully and freely becaus you will greatly bene fit yourself by S3 doing. The motive and th? plan are stated briefly as follows: I wish to convert my present stock into cash within the next 30 days for two reasons, first, I want to take a largo amount of cash to market, when I go to purchase my new fall stock, as I can by this means be sure of getting the lowest market prices.. Second, I must dispose of a large amount of goods to make room for thU new stock. This very reasonable bat pressing motive has made me deem it wise to pursue a plan which. will con vert my present stock into cash and do it at once. Therefore during the next 3 days, every article in my stock of Cloth ing, Hats, Gents' Furnishing Goods, Trunks and -Valises, will be sold without regard to profit or marked value, but at prices certain to force them from my shelves, at a great sacrifice is true, but at the same time putting me in position to more than make good the lies by increas ed facilities for hand ing fall goods It is needless to remind thinking people that this action on my part will put be fore the public royal bargains of unques tioned merit in a great variety of desira ble goods. An -opportunity like this is seldom offered and never missed, will fill the store with shrewd buyers, who will find that any reasonable offer takes the goods. Will we see you among the number ? if not, why not? -: Youra cordially and candidly, Mx Marcus, ' The shorter and the cutter of the clothing trade for ?0 days only the big 22.
