INFERIOR COURT.
The Fir6t Day's Session A .Heavy
Docket Judge Moore's Charge.
The July term ol Buncombe
inferior court convened yesterday
morning at ten o'clock Judge
Chas. A. Moore on the bench. Solic
itor Whitson, Clerk Patton, and his
deputy Mai. Erwin were on hand,
ready for the fiay, and as busy as
bees.
The selection and empaneling of
the grand jury was the first business
of the session, and the following
named citizens "good and true," of
Buncombe compose the grand in-,
quest for the term: D. L. Rey
nolds, foreman; E. J. Aston, Jno. C
Mitchell, Erwin Ingle, Mitchell: Ai
ken, J. M. Westall, J. A. GwaHney,
Foster Harper, F.' N.' Capehart, "T.
T. Belote, S. W. Ray, E. E. Go
lightly, J. A. Cochran, David Brack
and J. M. Hemphill.
Judge Moore's charge to the grand
jury was one of the best we have
ever heard in the court room. Able,
eloquent and exhaustive. He dwelt
at length upon the various crimes
coming under the jurisdiction of fhis
court, carefully and explicitly ex
fluining the meaning of the law and
its application 10 each distinctive
crime. His remarks were atten
tiyely listened to, and won encomi
ums of praise from the bar and
spectators who were present.
The docket for the July term is
a large one, but not so large as that
of the preceding term, owing to the
unusually large amount of public
business dispot-ed of at that sitting.
There are forty-seven cases on the
present docket, consisting of assault
with intent to kill, larceny, fornica
tion and adultery, may heim, carry
ing concealed weapons, affray, for
cible trespass, non payment of costs,
maiming stock, etc., etc
The petit jury is composed of M.
M. Gudger, T. F. Starne3, J. R.
Hemphill, J. If. Brown, R. G. Bell,
R. E. Bowles, Joel Brigman, J. S.
Bartlett, II. C. Dillingham, J. T.
West, J. M. McCoy an i S. S. Nor
man. The first case taken up at the
morning session was that of the
State vs. Henry Wheeler and Ma
tilda Guthrie, charged with fornica
ticn and adultery. The defendants
were represented by Messrs. Gudger
& Carter, while Solicitor Whitson
looked after the State's inter
ests unaided. Quite a number of
witnesses were examined, and the
case af'er able argument, given t"
the jury, who returned a verdict of
guUt,y.
There were six submissions yes
terday, a greater number" than has
yet been known since the inferior
court has been established in Bun
combe. The case of the Stales ve
Young, in which there are six d'-'
fendants came up for trial yesterday-
afternoon, lhe charge is an aliray.
Mr. Henry Hard wick e represents
the defense, and Solicitor Whitson
is the prosecutor.
Deputy sheriff A. C. Patterson is
the officer of the court, and a good
one he makes. Excellent order is
maintained, and it is hard to find a
cleverer set of gentlemen than those
who Ere running this term of Bun
combe inferior court. The writer
of this acknowledges courtesies ex
tended. lhe decoration of the Farmers,
