The "starry cross" period of a man's life is no sure index that that roan will receiye a "starry crown," if he labors in the radical vineyard of pseudo protection, with a free whiskey platform attachment. Everybody ho heard Senators Voorhees and Butler's speeches in Asheville on Monday, were de lighted, interested and instructed save our radical friends, who obsti nately refused to see the great light set before them. It is about time that the radical league crew in North Carolina should discover another democratic county horror (?) like those of Mitchell and Warren, and the ,'dear people" asked to weep such great enormities, thus pathetically expatiated upon by the leaders of the "great moral idea party." The demo crats of Indiana are in splendid trim and determined to win. We are pleased to see in the city Mr. R. C. L. An excursion train, consisting of ten coaches, from Augusta, Ga., and Charleston, S. C, arrived in the city at 11 o'clock last night. The train brought many of our friends frojn "across the border," who will spend to-day in viewing the magnificent scenery, and enjoy the pure air of our "Switzerland of America," and our Eden of North Carolina. To one and all we give a cordial welcome. The unloading of rotten water melons and decayed fruit at the WTestera North Carolina depot should be looked into by our health officers at once. We learn that the hotel at Alex- ander's, ten miles below Asheville, is crowded with guests, and that act commodations have been bespoken for six families, in addition, from Charleston, S. The case of the Stale vs. Jerome Ruff, et als.-,. charged with the killing of Gaither Reese, and remov ed from '; Madison to Buncombe or trial, was to" have been commenced in onr, superior court yesterday morning. In view of this fact, Judge Boykin on Monday, ordered Sheriff Worley to sumtnbns a special, venire of one, hundred and fifty men, re-; tamable yesterday morning to try the cause. It was thought that counsel for both sides, would be ready to go into trial yesterday morning, but when the case was "called Solicitor Moody asked for a continuance upon the grounds that material witnesses in the matter were not present, and ooi'j'Qt t , obtained. He claimed that they 'were in Tennessee,"ytheir wherebouts in that State to him un known. The JSolicitor's motion was resisted by the defendants counsel in a strong argument. Judge Boykin, however, allowed the Senator's mo tion, after argument by counsel of both sides, and the case was con tinued for trial until the next regu lar term of Buncombe Superior court. An order was als made, allowing the defendants to give bail in the sum of $2,000 each for their appearance for trial at the next court. The clerk was directed to issue capias ad testi Jtcan dum for the State's witnesses in Ten nessee. The defendants had not given bond last night, but it is understood that bail will be furnished to-day. The calendar for yesterday was dis posed of by one o'clock, p. m., and the court adjourned for the day. Judge Boykin is an active, working business man, and under his skillful management of the public .business there is avery fair prospect of the docket being cleared at this term, and both His Honor and the members of the bar seem determined to finish it up entirely. Reduction in Rates. Mr. E. G. Carrier, proprietor of the Asheville White Sulphur Springs' Hotel gives notice that he has reduced his rates for board at this hotel ten per cent, the guests in the house hav ing benefit of the reduction. This is putting the rates very cheap. In His Glory. Our townsman S. D. Pelham, Esq., is reveling in pleasures. The wicked efforts to injure Asheyille by continued allegations of sickness existing here, are ptill persisted in for selfish purposes. The parties indulging in this malev olent practice willl be known some of these days, and we promise them that their names will be given to the public without hesitation and without mercy. We say without fear of contradiction and on the au thority of all the physicians we have inquired of, that there is no fever here, no sickness of any kind other than that which befalls humanity everywhere. The Kaleigh Newa-Observer of yerterday says : "Something of a sensation was created on the streets last night by the report which was brought by parties who came in on the eastern train of a case of yellow fever at Goldsboro. It was stated that a telegraph operator came there Sunday from Jacksonville, Fla., and almost immediately upon his arrival was taken ill and developed a well-defined case of yellow fever. He was removed to the country, one a half miles distant from Goldsboro, so that all danger is entirely removed and the people do not seem to be greatly alarmed at the circum stance. The eity has been strict ly quarantined against Jackson ville." ; ma ne j-'cws-uoserver says: 1 tews-Observer Prof. A W. A dog, which was ly'ng under the house was killed, but for tunately no member of the family was injured. Immediately on the reading of the statements of White and Cress in court, District Attorney Busbee applied for and obtained copies and carried them to Washington and laid them before the Comptroller of the Currency, who sent an expert to examine the books of the bank and ascertain how far some of the allegations we're sustained by the facts. This expert has been at work quietly for some days. He has no purpose to make known here the results of his investigation, but the facts as he finds them will be reported to the authorities at Washington. This report, when made, will throw light on the sub ject ot the management of the State Bank and will be full; of interest to all who wish to know the facts.
