Henry Watterson says the demo crata of Connecticut and Rhode Ie land are happy and the republicans are cursing.' Bishop Mclntyre says John Wes ley made two serious mistakes in his life, viz: ''marrying hastily and meddling in politics." Two of about as dangerous things as a minister could fall a victim to. One of the brightest and newsiest papers which comes to our office is the Bristol (Tenc.") (knitter, a daily, recently established in that thriving town by Mr. C. H. Slack. It is credit to the town and its editor. and should be well sustained. Mr. Harrison, Mr. Blaine's lieu tenant on the Presidential ticket, has contributed 8750 to the nationa republican campaign fund. Cleve land gave 110,000 to the democratic fund. These contributions illustrate the relative' confidence of the two men in the result. MR. , JOHNSTON'S REPLY TO MR. EWART." The letter of Hon. Thos. D. John ston, in reply t the recent "open letter" of his opponent, Mr. H. G. Ewart, is not only a very able but very successful, exposition, and do fenseof the efforts of himself and the--democratJc party' to, give the people relief from the onerous bur dens put upon them by the repub lican party; It is a very clear ex posure Ot the hypocrisy ol Mr. Ew art and ibe republican party. We ask the people of this district to read it carefully. They will see just what Mr. John tori and the demo 1 crats have earnestly and persistently attempted U So by way of, first, re psaHog the' odious internal revenue laws, then to relieve them ot their oppressive teatures, also inai iat re publicans have as persistently op posed and defeated all cuch efforts for the relief jf our people, notwith standing the pledges of the repub licans in their Chicago platform. Mr. Johnston squelches Mr. Ewart's assertion thul the republicans op posed the reforms contained in the1 Mills bill because they desired to v.itA ntrainat that bill, bv show iox that similar measures Lr relief1 ware embraced in another measure which passed the House last winter which measure has been tied up by the republican Senate, without con-i sideration, Wince. Mr. Johnston's I. tier is a powtriul defence of de-J mocracy, and merits the most careJ tut consideration of our people. No fair-minded man can read it without being convinced of the sincerity of our faithful representative, and of the silly hypocricy of his opponent. WHAT IS SAUCE VoR A GOOSE OUGHT TO BE SAUCE FOR A GANDER. The republican arty, when rt coustructing the South and putiii g the bottom rail on top, the District of Columbia was treated to the same dose," a large majority of 1 the people of the Distiict being urgrues, as wasjgenerally the cuse throughout South. After trying this cegru rule in the Distiict for st-veral years, I're.-iileut Grant, recognizing the in competency and corruption of the Kovernuient thus established, recom mended its alteration or abolish ment, and Congress jins-ift n bill cn-atipg a legislature l'-.r i!so Dis trict, like the legislatures ot other Slates, upon whom was conferred the power of selecting the magis trates for said District. Now, who do our republican . friend? think voted to give this power to select mi&isisVes to the legislitur? Why, Oliver Hart Dockery, the re publican candidate lor Governor. The Raleigh News-Observer says: ''Congressman Rowland writes to say that during the third session of the 43d CoDgress Col. Docker', then alioember of Congreis, voted for Xt bill giving the legislature of the District of Columbia the power to appoint the magistrates for that District. Yet Col. Dockery says what is sauce for the goose is r.ot sauce for the gander, and that while i'. was right for the legislature of the District to appoint magistrates, it is intolerable oppression for the legis lature of North Carolina to do so.'J DOCKERY EVEN SLANDERS THE DEAD. The following from the Raleigh News-Observer of the oth ought to make every decent man in the State blush with shame for the man who is seeking to secure the highest of fice within their gift. Read- it care fully, and think about, it ye honest people! ''From time immemorial it has been accepted among civilized peo pie that nothing but good should be said about the dead. Col. Dock ery, however, holds himself inde pendent even of this rule, it appears. At Mooresville he endeavored to explain away his having voted for a negro lawyer for the legislature against a Worthy white farmer named Sneed ' by saying that Mr. Sneed's grandmother "was as black as the ace of spades." Now Mr. Sneed is dead and as it had never beenheardorthought of for amoment that lie had negro blood in his veins, a telegram was sent at ence to Rockingham to ascertain if there could possibly be any truth in the charge. Promptly came the answer in time for ludgc Fowle's reply to the Republican candidate and it was as follows "John W. Sneed had no negro blood in him that cyer heard of. I believe it (.the charge) to be a base slander of a dead man." It was signed by V. L. Steele. The Laurinburg, Richmond coun ty, Exchange takes the matter up and in the most indignant terms re pels the slander Col. Dockery puts upon the dead man, asserting that Mr. Sneed had never been regarded in the county, in the whole course of his useful life, as Tieing tainted in any degree as Col. Dockery sug gested; that all his people had been white and that he had always as sociated with white people. It characterized the charge as a most outrageous assault on the character of a dead man and so it seems to U, Here; then, we have the Repub-o lican candidate for the highest of fice in the gift of the people of the State not only slandering respecta ble white women and ministers of the gospel hut actually stooping so low as to slander the dead. What sort ot a man is he, anyhow, to demand the suffrages of decent men while expressing such senti ments on the stump? What sort of person will the man be who will vote for him in November. Who will be so lest to shame, so regard less of the good name as well as the welfare of the State as '-, vote for Oliver II. Dockery?:' m A Sonnd Legal Opinion. E. My brother also waa very low with Malarial Fever and Jaundice, but was cured by timely useoftliis medicine. Am eatisfie J Electric Bitters saved his life." Mr. D. I. WilcoxBon, of Horse Cave.
