North Carolinians in the Depart ' meata. - The Washington correspondent of the Durham Tobacco Plant gives the following interesting bit of con jecture, some of which might be called prophecy. He says: The democrats are heginniDg to look more serene, especially those who got in under the Civil Service rule?. 1 he others, those who were put in ' through political influence, are confident they will be promtly dismissed. The Chiefs of Divisions will go at once. These lrom North Carolina, who got in through y oliti cal influence, are Capt. Ed. Jones', ot Lenoir; Mr. Jas. Madison Leach, ol Lexington; Mr. Geo. McCorkle.'of Newton; Capt. John Hussey of Greensboro. These are all in the Treasury Department. A number of the Civil i i rvice clerks may re main, but that is very uncertain. A big broom, typical of a wish to sweep the last democrat out has beeen nailed up over the entrance of the republican committee head quarters. A great pressure will be brought to bear. on. Harrison, un doubtedly. Two things, however, may give theee clt-rks some hope, vis!..- Harris.- !,' as Senator, voted tor the CivJ! Service, law, and the republican national platform is pledged to Civil Service Reform. Real Estate. J. M. Campbell purchased a nine room house in North Asheville vesterdav at a good price. Examining- the Title. District attorney Col. Ham C Jones was engaged nearly all 'pf yesterday in examining the title to the land donated to the government by Mr. Wm. Johnston of this city, . upon "which to erect the proposed publio building. The titles were found to be absolutely perfect, and the district attorney will make his report to the Secretary of the Treasury accord ingly. The Grand Central. Asheville correspondent of the The Knoxville T.ibum has the folio tying to say: . ''Noticeable among the late improve ments in this city, in the way of build ing, nothing is more conspicuous than the new Giand Central, to which the last finishing touches have now been added. With a graceful iron bridge sjanoing Palton Avenue, connec'iug the new building with the original one, the tiro structures together afford ample and excellent accommodation for the steady stream of patrons which the popularity of this hostelry attracts." Important to Asheville, Capt. J. T. Patrick, Commissioner of Immigration for North Carolina, has given notice to onr people that he has arranged with the publishers of the Home-Seeker's Guide to get out a special edition of their magazine to be devoted' to North Carolina. This edition will be filled with each information in regard to North Carolina towns as will be best calculated to bring visitors from the North to North Carolina for the winter. This is probably the best opportunity Asheville has ever had for a paying advertisement at a very small cost Capt. Patrick has obtained a list of all the visitors who spent last winter in Florida, and be will mail a copy of this magazine to each one as soon as it is published. If Asheville's advantages as a winter resort are well written up the information will go directly into the hands of those who will be most interested and who 'of all men will be mo& likely to be influenced by .it. F lorida will of course have to be given np as a' winter resort, at least for the present, and the people of the North must have a milder climate. . They can not go to Florida. They must go some where. . . ' Gan. Grtely in Sci ibner's for November writes on the question : "Where Shall We Spend our Witter ? " This indicates that the question is one of absorbing interest to many people who have the means to go abroad. If the citizens of Asheville will avail themselves of this opportunity to answer the question they will reap a large reward without having to wait long lor it. ;, v- Terrible. ..." - Two-thirds of all deaths in New York City are from consumption or pneumonia. At 12 m.. yesterday, Judge Dick asked- the assistant diattict at torney,' Capt. Bason, if there was any ' other' other business : on his docket for disposition at this term of the Federal covirt. Capt.. Bason said, "nothing more," and the" No vember term was at an end. . The docket for this term was quite small, and besides the post office robbery case (in whicn the defendant was acquitted), :the perjary ! case, the fraudulent pension : cases, and . the counterfeiting case, (in which - the defendant was also acqnitted), there were causes tried of any conse quence. Violations ot the internal revenue, laws . are frequent, and will always be bo, as long as such laws exist, and the illicit distilla tion and retailing of the juice of the 'mountain asubbin-!' will occupy the attention of the Federal courts as long as a revenue officer remains in the land. The average moon" shiner is to be pitied, not because of his violation of the laws, but be cause he is honest in his belief that Federal interference and taxation are a robbery of his rights. He firmly believes that he is entitled to make 'sweet corn mash" out of his golden grain, and that no one is justified in saying him "nay." But the Govern ment does say "nay" with a big N, and nine times out often Mr. Moon shiner falls into the hands of Sena ator Vance's "red-legged grasshop pers," and is brought before the bar of Federal justice to answer for his sins against the law. A conviction can almost always be counted upon as ine outcome ot the trial, and ' one month in jail, aud one -hundred dol lars fine, with costs," is about the usual verdict the crooked distiller hears from the court. If he is lucky enougn to get oil, be is at his old tricks Again, and the deputy mar shals will indeed, have to be shrewd to catch him twice for the same of fence. Moonshining is not now half so frequent as it used to be, but the officers of the law find all their time taken up in running to earth the wily midnight distiller in the coves and mountains of the west. . At this term of c u t tie follow ing convictions ana sentences were recoided. All of theou parties were yiolators against the internal reve nue laws: - Calvin Lane; 1 month in jail, and $iuu nne. Jno. McDonald, same aa above. B. P. Grant, " " J. P. Underwood, " Jno. H. Smith, " Lee Murphy, " " C. M. Trull, '. J, S .CarrJngtr; 2 months in jail ; tiuunae. Berry Elders; 3 months in jail; $100 fine. Lazarus Privett; 2 months in jail; $100 fine. Costs are added to all of these fines. The business of the court has been rapidly and satisfactorily dis patched by Judge Dick, district at torneys Jones and Bason, Clerk Reed, Marshal Settle, deputy Glenn and deputy clerk Moore. The jury and grand jury were able and efficient &nd altogether, this session of the court was the most business-like and thoreugb of any yet held in Asheville, Judge Dick yesterday took up the civil or circuit court dock.et.and will probably adjourn that court on Thursday of next week, in order to hold Federal court at Charlotte the Monday following.
