SALOON CLOSING Editor of the Gazette: n In noticing through your codumtns the proceediingis of the board of ald'ermen, that the board had decided that the bar rooms should be closed at ten o'clock p. m., ex cept on Saturday, when they should close at 10:30 p. m. I think this action Is -wrong, : when "I say wrong, 1 mean that I doubt whether the board has a -right to pass such an or der, unless for the (welfare of the city, all publlo sitores ""should close' at a certain hour. -Jt.wili be obvious to any right thamk ing citizen that nothing of the kind could be! done, by law or equity. It is true that for police .regulations houses where liquor is sold can be restricted, but what does the construction mean? It -certainly could mean no other than a man or a set of man, should keep an orderly house, or should not sell liquor to minors or on line Salbbath. This, however, is done by the leg islature : already, but whllte repeated ef forts have been made by the legislature to have hours for opening and closing all bar rooms of the state, yet dt has never passed, owing,' as I believe, .that the consti tution will warrant no such action. The only way .that a public house can be clos ed by a corporation, where it does not violate any state statute, ds to declare it a nuisance. Can this be done by any of the saloon houses in our city? What good oan result by -closing the saloons at ten o'clock in stead of twelve o'clock, I oan not see, even if the law would hold good, and the board had a right to make such an order. The working people generally are gone home 'before the (bell strikes ten, then those who visit the bars are those wtihdn our gates as visitors, arfd passing aiway their hours and thus bars are able to turn tihe two hours each day into I suppose enough to pay their lienses. As for in stance, you take fifty-two days from the year, as it would take from .them, and counting them to take in iper kiay $25, each and you take from each about $1,300 per an num, and from a class that 90 per cent, are strangers or visitors among us. I think, upon reflection, that the board will not hesitate to rescind their order that they passed, unadvisedly, and one which they thought at the time was for the best. I am yours, DAVID.
