Meeting of Ladies to Assist in Car

Washington's Plan.
Washington, Bee. 15. The ladies . who
have undertaken the duty of carrying into
effect the plans of George Washington
as expressed in several of his messages
to congress and in ,ihis (farewell address
concerning -the estaMisbment at the eapf- .
tal of a free national university, are in
session here for the purpose of completing
and extending their -organization. j

of Washington, was by Samuel -Blodgett,
m l0d. , He petitiojied congress to make
suitable appropriations to carry out the
plan, but no attention was paid to him,
Two years later he ; presented a petition,
signed by 18,000 name, and asked for an
appropriation of money and a grant of
public lands as a permanent fund for the
support of the university. A good deal of
umterest was taken in the agitation by
Jerterson and Madison and other prom'i
neat citizens, but nothing happened. A-
project has been revived, and there is al
ways a. bill "before congress embodying the
plan. Now that the ladies have taken hold
of it, .v?e may expect some results, for
tney are determined to shame congress
into doing its duty. They want to raise a
fund v of ?250,000 for the purpose of erect
ing a "building in this city to be. known as
the George Washington Memorial, and to
be used as the headquarters for future ef
forts in carrying out the will and wishes
of the father of his country. The purpose
is to lay the cornerstone of this "building
