The origin of the fire was supposed to -have started from a defect in elec tric wiring. The hotel was filled with guests, many of whom had narrow es capes from death. Pour cottages near by were also 5urned. The.North Carolina infantry is en camped about a mile and a half from the scene of the fire and they went heroic work as a buildings by their bucket brigade. A negro soldier of the Eighth Illinois immune regi ment was shot dead on Friday night at San Juan, where the regiment is do in guard duty. General Lawton sent a staff officer to investigate and today General" Shafter went to San Lui to look into the matter.
