Upon the official Teturns from Mitch ell county depends the congressional elec tion in this district. ,At 2 o'clock this morning Mitchell had not been heard from.- The returns, however, must be in by 'today according to law. Both sides -were claiming the victory last night. In 1896 Pearson had in Mitchell 1,199 majority. According to the democratic estimate if he falln only eleven votebelow that on this occasion 1 is a beaten matu That is the same as saying that if he repeats the per formance, of 1896 hei is a winner. TJhte liv question is: Was Mitchell affectted im the democratic landslide7 The democrats eay it must have been and Chairman' Rogers " figures ihat .Peairson's majority in Mitchell will on ly be be about 1,080 votes, a si amp of over 100. On the other hand it is claim ed that Mitchell ia . umshabable in its dyed-iavthe-wotvl republicanism, and that eParson will come out of the coun ty with more votes than ever before. The reipubhcans Claimed: yestei'day to be in receipt of telegrams from Mitch elL indicating1 an increased vote. Mr. fejtforris, Pearson's private secretary, f-told" .Chairmani Rogers that Mitchell would give Pearson from 1,300 to 1,250 majority. But, under the circumstances, uneas toes must pervade Richmond Hill. At the same time it would be hard to find 'a superfluity of confidence in the vi cinity of .Wayn?esiviile.
