Mr. Cleveland declined three or four such presents. Other presidents 'have accepted them, niotwithstandimg the constitutional pro hibition, and there are several interest ing relics of this kind on exhibition at the national museum and in the library of the state department. it is not necessary for our government to make any present to Mr. Camibon, 'the French ambassador, because he was acting purely in the 'interest of Spain. During the Framco-Prussian warv Mr. Washburn e, our minister at 'Paris.looked ofter the interests of the Prussian gov ernment in a similar manner. The French made no acknowledgement of Ms services, but the Germans presented him a miniature portrait of Emperor Wil liam set In diomondek ' Mr. .'Washburne declined the gift because of its great value and the constitutionlal prohibition, but afterwards accepted an ordinary oil painting of the emperor and of Prince Bismarck. During the late war between China and Japan our ministers and consular representatives looked after the inter ests Of citizens of both countries in the territories of the other, and suitable ac knowledgements were made, and for the same reaeon it is not only prVper but necessary that. President ' M'Kinley should show some sense of gratitude to the British ambassador at Madrid and the Britiih consult In Spain and Cuba for their services in looking after th interests in the United States and Spain and Cuba. Mr. - Jerome, British consul general at Havana, rendered very im portant service. The British consuls at Barcelona and at Corunna were mobbed for trying to protect American interests, but the most the president can do i to write an: autograph letter expressing the appreciation of our government and people. The committee was instructed to meet with the special committee appointed by the board of aldermen, it was further ordered to call a mass meeting for discussion of the amendments and plans and to make all necessary arrangements for the amendments to come before the leg islature at Raleigh. The secretary of the board was in structed to write an official note to all members of the legislature frorn this county and senatorial district urging them 'to work for the repeal of the present purchase tax on merchants. Furthermore? the apple' contains a larger percentage of phosphorus than lany other fruit or vegetable. This phosphor as,r says The" Family Doctor, i Is sdmirably adapted for renewing the es sential nervous matter, lethicln, of the brain and '. spinal cord.. It Is perhaps, for the same reason, rudely understood that old Scandinavian traditions represent the applet as the food of the gods, who, when they felt themselves -to be growing feeble and' infirm, resorted 'to this fruit for re newing their, powers of mind and body. . Also the acids of the apple are of great use for men of sedentary; habits, whose livers are sluggish in, action, these, acids serviBg to eliminate from the body noxious mkf.f,PTS whth.'1f MfailnM) tsnnlil m&IrA jaundice or skin eruptions and other al- lied troubles. Some such experience must have led to our custom of taking apple sauce-with roast pork, rich goose and like dishes. The malic acid of ripe apples, either raw or cooked, will neutralize any excess, of chalky matter, engendered by eating too much meat. It is also the fact that such fresh fruit as the apple, the pear and the plum, when taken ripe and with out sugar, diminishes acidity in the stom ach rather than provokes it. Their vegeta ble salts and juices are converted into al kaline carbonates, which tend to counter act acidity. A ripe, raw apple is one of the easiest vegetable substances for the stomach to deal with, the whole process of its diges tion being completed in 85 minutes. Gqi rard found that the "pulpe of roasted ap ples mixed in a wine quart of faire water and labored 'together until it conies to be as apples and ale which we call lambes weol never faileth Mn certain diseases of the raines. which myself hath often prov ed, and gained thereby both crownes and credit." "The pairing of an apple, cut somewhat thick, and the inside whereof is laid to hot, burning or running eyes at night, when the party goes to bed, and is tied or bound to the same, doth help the trouble very speedily, and, contrary to ex pectation, an excellent secret."
