The wedding of Mr. Clem Brooks to Miss Helen Begg was solemnized this morn ing at 9 o'clock at the Baptist church by Rev. W. L. Richards. The bride entered the church leaning on her brother's arm, the groom with his brother, who adted as best man, and they met at the altar. The church wQ.s beautifully decorated with autumn leaves. As the bridal party left the church, showers of rice were thrown at them by friends who wished them much (happiness. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks left on the IT. & B. train for Transylvania county, to spend two weeks with Mr. Brooks' people. They will return to Henderson ville to make their home, where Mr. Brooks will build and enter in the drug business. J. P. Rickm'an, of Hendersonville, and George Barber, of Asheviile, act ed as ushers. The bride is an accomplished mu sician. She has had charge of the music cf the Baptist church for sever al years. She has also been a faithful teacher in ithe Sunday school. Mr. J Brooks is a druggist and finished his course in medicine at Chapel Hill last March. He has been in the employ ment of W. H. Justus for several years. He will enter the drug .business for himself. ORCHARD AND GARDEN. If trees are to be planted, in the fall, the soil shouid iirst be prepared in good condition. All small fruits should be planted far enough apart to'adniit of using the horse cultivator. So far as it is possible lare limbs should never be removed from plum and cherry trees. Thrifty, growing trees yield the finest looking fruit; old and nurtured trees the richest fruit. No variety of pears will ripen so finely on the trees as they will when gathered and ripened in the house. Good feeding must attend rapid growth in trees and plants as well as in animals. Make the soil in the .orchard rich. In the .pruning encourage the growth of new wood. Many trees and vines fail! because the new wood is cut off, leaving the old. With the peach the young trees should be started with low heads, the lower limbs not more than two feet above the ground. Lice on -trees may be killed by dissolv ing a pound of potash in a gallon of wa fer and applying on the affected parts With a brush.
