Her visit partook of the nature of a festival, so novel was the experience to the Chinese women whose lives are passed almost entirely within the walls of their yamen Ihey examined her clothing and were partly pleased and partly astonished at it. They were shocked by her shoes and especially by the fact that her feet were not confined by bindings. Finally one of them said, through the interpreter, "Yon can walk and run just as well as a man?" "Why. certainly." Can you ride a pony as well as a man?" "Of course." "Then you must be as strong as most men." "Yes, I trunk I am. "You wouldn't let a ij.n beat you, not even your husband, would you? "Not at all." The Chinese woman paused, laughed and then said. "NoW I understand why foreigners never take more than one wife. They are afraid to." Saturday Evening Post. They Were About to Make Broth ot Their Attendant. A celebrated Scotch physician tells a story of a madhouse doctor whose pres ence of mind alone saved his life: "A great friend of mine was for a con siderable time the medical superintendent of a lunatic asylum near Glasgow. 'One night in making his customary rounds he had occasion to visit the pa tients in the kitchen, who were preparing the dinner. There were seven of them, all big, sturdy fellows, who were believed to be harmless. The keeper only looked in upon them now and again, feeling that his constant presence was unnecessary. "The doctor unlocked the iron barred door of the kitchen and went in among the lunatics. "There were five large boilers contain ing scalding water ready for making the day's dinner for the patients. "One of the lunatics pointed at the boil ers full of hot water and, laying his hand upon the doctor's shoulder, said, 'Doctor, you'll make a fine pot of broth,' and the words had no sooner been uttered than the other six madmen shouted in a voice of delight, 'Just the thing,' and, seizing the doctor were in the very act of put ting him into one of the large boilers of scalding water when the doctor had the presence of mind to say, but not a second too soon: " 'Capital broth, but it would taste bet ter if I took my clothes off.' "The madmen, with a yell of delight, said 'yes,' and the doctor asked them to wait a moment while he went and took his clothes off, but as soon as he got out of the kitchen he turned the key in the door and ordered' the keeper to see to the lunatics being put under restraint. "The doctor's presence of mind saved him, it is true, from a terrible death, but he died shortly after raving mad. The experiere had destroyed his reason." Cincinnati Enquirer. According to the behests of Judaism actual guilt cannot be converted into right by any act of forgiveness or atone ment, human or divine. The definition of the Hebrew word kofar, which is the root of kippurim, conveys quite a differ ent meaning. It denotes "covering up," to "overlay." It means that by carrying out resolutions of repentance into prac tice man will be able to "cover up" a multitude of sins. This is the rational idea of Judaism regarding the expiation of sins. This is the cornerstone of salva tion1 as attained through man's own ef' forts. Jewish Spectator. E. E. "She was my model wife until yester day that is," remarked the cynical bach elor who lives in an apartment house on the east side, "she was my model for wives. She and her husband lived in the flat just over mine, and I used to hear him come home at hours that made even a hardened old sinner like me ashamed for all men s sake. It would be 2 or 3 and sometimes 4 o'clock in the morning when he would come thumping up stairs, and I knew the privacy of an apartment house is not all that it might be don t you know, that she was waiting for him and that the door flew open to greet him and that for an hour or two afterward there would be the sound of talking. Not scolding, but ierry conversation and laughter. "I used to hr.ir the rattle of dishes and often on summer nights would catch savory odors floating down the light shaft that blrssed agent for the trans mission of everything but air and sun shine. Then after a time there would be silence. It used to go on that sort of things-night after night, and I wondered what sort of a woman she could be to put up with a man of such irregular hab its as her husband apparently was. "One day I met her in the corridor a little woman with a face that beamed over with smiles and a whole world of love in her eyes, and I cursed that man in every picturesque phrase I could think of as a brute who didn't deserve such luck. Yesterday I made a discovery. He is a morning newspaper man, she is a bride, and with theories of her own to work out she has upset every law of do mestic management to conform to the hours of his work, turning night into day and having the evening dinner at 4 o'clock in the morning instead of 6 o'clock at night. "She is still my' model for a newspaper man's wife, but I've ceased to think of her as the modern Griselda. She may be patient, but she's got a heap of wisdom tucked away under, that shining brown head of hers." Milwaukee Sentinel. Its habitat is the swamps, and the following general description will illustrate its beauty: Forehead, red, be coming yellowish on top and shading into bright yellow on the neck: back. feathers, cinnamon edged with green; under parts, scarlet, with a dash of orange on the throat; secondary feathers, bright blue on the upper surface, pale brown under neath: legs, brown; eyes, yellow. Seen in the dusk resting on the lily pads of a swamp, the ara-tricolor is one of the handsomest specimens of the bird life to be found in any land or any dime. Cu ban Letter. She Was the Seventh Daughter of m Seventh Danghter, Always Playedt . In Seven Handed Games and Would Invariably Draw to a Seven Spot. The old Mills tavern, by a tollgate in the suburbs of Trenton, was kept for more than half a century bj Martha Mills, a woman who made a small for tune out of the pennies she saved from her commission on the tolls that she col lected at the gate that she opened and shut without missing a day for 50 years. To these savings she added thousands of dollars made in her dealings with poli ticians, who came to her hostelry to lay plans and connive for the passage of measures by the legislature and for po litical appointments in which they were interested. She possessed a remarkably keen eye for business. Her terms were always cash, Nand her prices for favors and refreshments were at such a pitch that they yielded her a liberal profit. She was a tall, muscular woman, with an attractive face. She might have mar ried many times during her younger days, but she frankly declared she loved money better than anything else on earth and that she wouldn't trust a man as far as she could throw a church by the steeple. Among her other accomplishments Martha was an expert poker player, and coupled with her knowledge of the game and her careful estimate of the value of a hand was a "streak of good luck" that staid with her from one end of the game to the other. She rarely got up from the table a loser, and she would never take a hand unless there were seven players. She explained this peculiarity by say ing that she was the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter and had an abid ing faith in the number seven. Her con fidence in this number always prompted her to draw cards to it, no matter what odds were against her. If there was a seven spot in Martha's hand she would draw to it, and when she did the pot generally went over to her side of the ta ble. Away back in the forties and fifties there were some pretty sharp poker play ers among the members of the New Jer sey legislature and the politicians who hovered around the lobby. They played a "no limit" game, and when they felt like making a night of it without being disturbed they went to the Mills tavern and sat down to the game in what was known as the "Chamber of Fate," a big room in a remote part of the house. Here, with a jug of applejack on the floor, the players sweated and fumed and rejoiced from early in the evening until sunrise, and Martha staid up to count the "kitty" and lock it up in a small iron chest that she kept under her bed. The biggest winning that Martha ever made was a""$l,500 pot, and a seven spot did the trick. It was in the winter of 1856. The legislature was in session, and the railroads had several important bills that they wanted passed. As a conse quence the lobbyists and members of the assembly had "money to burn." The ses sions in the "Chamber of Fate" that win ter were frequent and unusually exciting. There was not nrich chance for Martha to get into a game, but the "kitty" was a fat one every night, and she was satis fied with her income from that source. One rainy night six of the "stiffest poker players who had the entrance to the "Chamber of Fate' came together in a room of Martha's tavern, and a -turn at poker was suggested, and Martha was in vited to take a hand. "Centlemen." she said. "I'll play if you say so, but I feel unusually lucky, and I think it will be better if you will leave me out." Everv one of the others declared that he felt lucky and insisted that Martha should take a hand in it. They adjourned to the upstairs room and began what was probably the shortest big game ever played. Now," said one of the players Deiore the cards were dealt, "let's hnd out which one of us has the least money, then we'll make him put it up. We'll watch his pile and then play table stakes." ' The proposition met with the approval of the other players. The man who had thfi smallest roll was George binciair, an Essex county man. ARTHUR, Trusrt.ee. Octoser 24, 1890. . .r 2tS-10t " - .- . :. He spread the money on the table, and the next minute there was '$2,100 displayed on the board. Henry Whitehead, a south Jersey as- semblvman, dealt the cards, 'lhe pot was opened by Miles Graham, who started the ball rolling with a bet of $20. The player next to him raised the bet $50. Martha saw the $70, and the man on her left raised it $oU more. When it came to the opener to see all the raises, he gave it another "boost of $50 and then was raised $oO and then $100. Meanwhile Martha trailed along. Graham apparently believed mat ne had the best hand, for he raised tne third, fourth and fifth time and came to a standstill only when the money on the board was stacked in the middle of it. "That's a pretty comfortable looking pile," remarked Whitehead, picking up the pack of cards. There were six pat hands out. Martha was the only one to draw. "Well, gen tlemen," she said, "it's all in the draw, after all, and if I make my hand I'll take the money. It's a show down, so here's my hand." She opened out the tray, four, five and six of diamonds and the ten of hearts. "Now, Whitehead," said she as ' she discarded the ten of hearts, "you may give me the, seven spot of diamonds; then I'll have a straight flush." Whitehead dealt the card, turning it over as he threw it down,- and, to the amazement of the players, it was the seven spot of diamonds. The straight flush was made, and it won the money. That ended the game, which lasted ex actly four minutes, and Martha's prof its were $1,800. She pocketed the money and a week after gave a dinner to the sir other players that was the most elaborate affair of the kind ever spread under the roof of the old Mills tavern. Boston Herald.
