The recepits of the Masonic fair at Wilmington netted $6,000 or $7,000. The first Masonic temple in the state has been built at Wilmington at a cost of $50,000, and the fair was held to ac cumulate funds to liquidate the float ing debt on this temple. The North Carolna ducking grounds are much frequented by parties from the north. A yacht containing a num ber of Philadelphia gunners reached Norfolk last Sunday, bringing with them 400 geese and ducks, 300 diamond b(acks and three klteer. It appears that after all the con victs have not picked! all the cotton crop on the leased farms. It is said that 100 TDales remain unpicked on the Northampton farm. The lease expires December 31, and the cotton remiaining is the property of the land owner. The fact is that the state, like some farmers, planted more cotton than it can pick. In the supreme court the appeal of Jefferson, the murderer of Captain Cal vin Barnes, near Wilson, has been ar gued. 'There is a new point in the case, this being as to whether proof rf the dying declaration of Barnes to his little son, "Have Jefferson arrested," is competent. The attorney general contended that it was, on the ground of motive on Jefferson's part to mur der Barnes. The wholesale grocery store of Vaughan, Hemphill & Co. of this place was destroyed' by fire Saturday night. The loss is about $12,000, with insur ance to the amount of $5,000. It isnot known how the fire originated, but it is supposed that some thoughtless boys caused it by shooting Roman candles. The firm will probably open for business in the neair future and erect a large brick building in the spring. The burned building belong ed to J. S. Blair, and his loss is $1,000 with no insurance. 'North Wilkesboro Corespondence Raleigh Post. There was a case very much out of the run of things tried before a mag istrate in Cline's township last Mon dky. Three leaiding citizens were in dicted under a certain section of the code for breaking into St. Peter's Lutheran church. They took a glass out of the window, entered the church and opened the door for the purpose of admitting the preacher and having di vine services. They were bound over to the superior ourt in a bond of $100 each. The church was locked by mem bers of the Missouri synod and the men Indicted 'belonged to the Tennessee synod. Newton Enterprise. The surveyors of the Black Diamond railway reached Franklin Saturday and are now camping near J. S. Sloan's place beyond theb ridge. Cap tain Kirk was in to see us Monday ev ening. He informed us that he com menced the survey of the North Car olina division) at Bushnell and has worked this way. The twenty-three miles below Bushnell will be surveyed later. The captain says he found It Impracticable to follow the old survey, but had to seek higher ground to get above the water line and avoid extreme curves. He gained four miles between Bushnell and! Franklin and is highly pleased with the route. He will con tinue up the opposite side of the river five or six miles, then come down this side and select the better route. He expects to get through by New Tear. Franklin Press.' Mr. B. D. Springs says he has no tified Mr. J. P. Crowder, his manager, not to plant over 350 acres in cotton next year and not under 300. This does not sound so interesting until we con sider that he has been accustomed to having from 900 to 1,100 acres in the fleecy staple. Every year you can hear about "cutting down," and "cutting down" with a "vengeance." We have already mentioned in these columns the Immense quantity of grain Mr. Springs hws nlanted. He has about -an hun dred! head of cattle on hand, having re cently added a new variety of large r1t:p Vvrped at fancv rerices. In a few weeks he expectsto add about one hundred steers which he Will fatten for the market and for the benefit of the measure. The Droeressive spirit of tills -rvrin,rrpssive farmer has already had a wonderful influence for good in this section, and! the sooner it spreads frrnoot the lenerth and breadth of this beautiful southland, so soon will thprp ' Hp that happiness and content- freedom to our firesides that is characteristic of the independent farmer who plants what he pleases ana buys what he pleases.
