EMen Tucker, colored, was convicted of aissault with deadly weapons and sen teaiced to thTee months in jail. A mistrial was declared imthe case of Carl Lewis and James Sorrells. Andy Benson, colored, was foun guilty on one charge of larceny and ac quitted on another. Julius Maner pleaded guilty to qis turbing a religious congregation and judgment was suspended on payment of costs. The trand jury found eighteen true bills yesterday and nine not true. The net proceeds of the entertain ment were 61.50. Lorick & Smith, with a large force of men and teams, began work yesterday digging the basement for the scnool to be erected at the Sulphur Springs. The work will be pusheu as rapidly as pos sible and it is hoped that ithe waJlls may be begun, within the next two or three weeks. LECTURE ON THE N0:E. Given by Dr. Charles S. Jordan Last Evening. Dr. "Charles S. Jordan '--tured last evening at the old library building on "The Nose and its Care," under ithe aus pices of the Asheville Public Health association. The attendance wa very good, and the lecture was thoroughly appreciated by all who attended. The subject was treated in a scientific way, but so everyone could understand it. The lecture showed Dr. Jordan under stood his subject. He gave a general summary of the nose in its normal con dition, and then a description of the nose When Jt is In a catarrhal condition or sufferng from acute inflammation, and the consequences of these irrita tions. When all the normal conoitions are changed all th-e conditions, he said, could be avoided by cleanliness of .the nose. This, he said, was the ast m the different members, as the eyes, teeth, etc., we clean, whereas it should be the first. To the lack of cleanliness idue the many cases Ox catarrh which people are heir to. PLAYS AT COLLEGE. Franch and German Pupils Demon strated Their Proficiency. Miss Bernikopffs second year class oX the Asheville College presented the French and German play, "vnen the Cat's Away the Mice Will Play," last evening in the college chapel. The parts were acted well and the vernacu lar was well spoken. The plays were somewhat on the same ordei . both being full of amusing scenes.
