F. R. DARBY, "P. & T. A., Asheville, N. C day. E Charlotte is making extensive prep arations for her gala week, May 21 to 26. The Raleigh Athletic association has perfected organization and work will begin at once to put a strong team in the field. Messrs. R. P. Getty and S. J. May, of Nantahala, were in town last week on business. We are glad to state that Mr. Getty is taking out paying ore from his gold mine. Murphy Scout. At a meeting of representatives of North Carolina educational institu tions, held in Durham, it was de i ' that professional or hired baseball players -will no longer be allowed on the school teamsof this state. Messrs. T. C. McDonald and W. M'. West organized an anti-amendment club Saturday at Hangingdog with twenty members. W. B. Lovingood is president and Robert Lovingood sec retary. The club will meet at 4 p. m. on the second and fourth Saturdays in each month. Cherokee Scout. Outdoor athletics are next term to be made a feature at the Agricultural and Mechanical college at Raleigh. An "thletic field" hase been prepared for use in the autumn. Football, base ball, running, jumping, hurdle racing and "hare and hounds" will be the fea tures, but there will also be pole vaulting, putting the hammer, etc. Measurements are to be taken of all students, and they will be properly developed. Mr. J. S. Dunn, of the forty-sixth North Carolina, writes from Concord that he has in his possession General Robert B. Lee's general orders to his troops after the battle of the Wilder ness and fights around Richmond. He thinks the old confederates who will be here during the May carnival would like, to hear the orders read. This might prove of interest to the crowd on veterans' day. Charlotte News. News has been received at Charles ton, S. C, of a whale being found on May 4 near the terminus of the Oonway Seashore railroad, Horry county, this state, a few miles below the North Carolina line. The whale is dead and appears to have been harpooned. It i3 52 feet long and 24 broad at its mouth and over 14 feet across its tail. The last visitor of this kind on this coast was to Charleston harbor, some twelve years ago. It was killed by some local fishermen and the backbone preserved. Mr. C. G. Heilig has shown us a vial of golden grains from, the vein on his farm near Mount Pleasant that is al together the prettiest specimen that we have seen. It came, he says, from a single rocK, wnicn, Deing picKea to pieces, the little nuggets dropped out like the kernels of walnuts. Should the vein carry the yellow metal at that rate to a goodly distance it will prove a mine of fabulous .value. Concord Standard. CONDUCTOR ROYAL ACQUITTED. Editor of the Gazette. Dear Sir: We do not suppose you would intentionally do our client, Captain John Royal, an injustice, and presume you will publish his side of the controversy in the matter of the charge brought agrainst him by one Melvina Moore, a colored woman, for insulting her on the cars between Havelock and New Berne. Captain Royal is the conductor on the cars be tween these points, and this woman was a passenger at the time of the al leged insult. There were six men pass ing in and out of the cars at the time, and one of them was in the car dur ing the entire time that Captain Roy al was in the car. At the trial three magistrates pre sided, and after hearing- all the evi dence that was introduced, they found the prosecution to be absolutely un founded and both frivolous and mali cious, and gave Captain Royal a cer tificate to that effect, and he is re tained by the railroad company. He is a man of excellent character and a member of the methodist church. "We hope you will do him the justice to publish this letter. D. L. WARD and L. J. MOORE, at torneys for Royal. New Berne, N. C, May 5. RING RULE REPUDIATED. Morganton Teaches a Lesson to the Champions of Goebelism. Correspondence of the Gazette. Morgan town, N. C, May 8. A few of the Morgantown democratic bosses, with closed doors, fixed up a slate, without consulting the rank and file, for mayor and commissioners of the towft. The "boys in the ditbhes" thinking this just a. little too ctfeeky, proposed to the populists and republi cans that they would have "fusion." A ticket was at once fixed up, satis factory to ail concerned, and through this ticket the following gentlemen were elected: For mayor, John M. Mull, republican; for commissioners, L. A. Ward, republican; T. P. Moore, T. G. Cobb and Isaac Lazarus, demo crats. Much of the dissatisfaction arose from the selfish partisan manner in which", the new registration was conducted and this should be a warning to al registars, not only in Burke but all over the state, for ev en democrats, particularly the- honest rank and file, do not approve of the people's most saored rights being tam pered "with. For leaders of any party who permit and direct frauds to be practiced upon the registration, books or at the ballot box may expect some thing to drop and that right early. C. AFTER USIN6, THE ELECTION IN MURPHY. An Exciting Contest The Killing of Abel Jenkins. Special Correspondence of the Gazette. Murphy, N. C, May 8. The town election occurred yesterday, and, there being two tickets in the field, some lit tle interest and excitement ensued. The town is democratic, though D. W. Deweese, the republican candidate for mayor, was defeated by Ben Posey, former mayor, by only seventeen votes. The present board of aldermen will consist of R. H. Hyatt, A. A I Fain, J. F. Abernathy, J. M. Vaughn, B. May field and W. H. Woodbury, the latter gentleman being a republican. It is rumored that Ben Posey will now resign that he was seeking a vindica tion of his former course as mayor. The Scout will say this morning that Able Jenkins of Graham, was snot and instantly killed recently by two broth ers, Jack and Flem Carver, near a small place named Homestead, about fifteen miles from Robbinsville. There had been trouble between the men for some time, and at a meeting a fight en sued at which Jenkins, as stated above, was shot and instantly killed. Jack Carver was shot in the back, the ball lodging against the skin in the breast and could be plainly seen. The other was afterward captured and, with his brother, Jack, who will recover, was lodged in jail. No one as present ex cept the three and it is not known who fired the first shot. A CHINES. Your mother and grandmoth ers never thought of using anything else for Indigestion or Biliousness Doctors were scarce, and they seldom heard of Appendicitis, Nervous Prostration or Heart Failure, etc. They used August Flower to clean out the system and stop fermentation of undige ted food, regu late the action of the liver, stimulate the nervous and organic action of the system, and that is all they took when feeling dull and bad with headaches and other aches. Efforts of Russia to Keep Leprosy Beyond the Siberian Border., The east is never free from leprosy, and Russia is always dreading that the sly white pest may cross her borders. Occa sionally, though not often, it creeps into the homes of the aristocracy. A certain grand ball was given at St. Petersburg during the spring of 1898. Among the ried countess. A gentleman asked one of her relatives to introduce him, received an assent and danced with the lady sev eral times. Later, as they stood in an exposed portion of the ballroom, the gen tleman said : "This draft is injurious. You should be careful of yourself, for I see there is a slight eruption on one of your shoulders. Oh, it isn't marked enough to spoil your beauty. But I, you know, am a physi cian. Have you, by the way, any other little spots like this elsewhere on your lovely skin?" "Yes," replied the lady; "I have a few. And I wish, doctor, that you could give me some medicine for them." "It would afford me great happiness to do so," was the gallant reply. That night the countess did not return to her-home. All search for her resulted vainly. It was not until many weeks afterward that her agonized parents re ceived a letter which told them that then daughter was in the X. leper asylum and that all attempts to see her must prove futile. The parents begged piteously to have her immured at her own home in a tower which she alone would occupy. Any thing was preferable for them to the liv ing death which they felt now to be her doom. But no entreaties availed. The gentleman who had danced with the young countess at the ball had been a disguised police agent, and she will end her days in the terrible lazar house whith er he had her conveyed among others ac cursed like herself.
