Captain A. T. Sigmond has receiv
from the state chemist an analysis f
a sample of magnetic iron ore taken
from his B4ker mountain lands in as
county. The analysis shows 52.05 per
centmagnetic iron, and the state
chemist makes a special note: "Good
grade iron ore." Captain Sigmon ex
perts either to sell the lands or pro
vide, in some way for utilizing the
irdn ore. The supply is apparently
inexhaustible. There is also a rich
mica mine on the same premises, that
has been satisfactorily tested. Hick

This state's militia quota, out of the
$400,000 allowed by act of congress of
1808 for the militia of all the states,
is about $10,000 a year, in ordinance or
quartermaster's stores. Under the new
law, enacted by the present congress,
the appropriation is increased to $1,
000,000. Thus this state will in future
get $25,000 a year. It is the plan to
equip the militia thoroughly for field
service. The needs are numerous. The
supply of tentage was burned last
February. It was stored in the base
ment of a tobacco warehouse, owing
to lack of room in the state arsenal.

At the experiment station here Prof.
Massey is now raising 50,000 Bermuda
lilies. These will soon be in 'bloom.
They are grown for the bulbs, and the
latter will be sold to Henderson &
company, florists, of Philadelphia.
That firm sent the sets here for plant
ing. There were three wagon loads of
the sets. In Bermuda a disease has
nearly ruined the lily trade. This dis
ease got in a lot of the li!ies grown
here last year. This year it has not
appeared. Professor Massey is also
growing 10,000 narcissus plants and
5,000 hyacinths for Henderson & com
pany. The latter are deeply interest
ed in the matter and want to have

Charlotte Observer.
The presidency of the Baptisi Fe
male' university at Raleigh has been
tendered Rev. John E. White to suc
ceed Dr. J. C. Blasingame, whose res
ignation was recently accepted. Mr.
White has not yet decided whether he
will accept, and the trustees, at his
request, have consented to wait ten
days for his decision. The selection of
of Mr. White was made at a meeting
of the board of trustees of the univer
sity, held Thursday, and the choice
was unanimous. Rev. John C. White
was born in Clayton, Johnston coun
ty, and is now in his thirty-first year.
He is a graduate of Wake Forest col
lege, and has held pastorates in Wil
son and Edenton. His executive abil
ity has been given recognition by the
church in electing him to positions he
now holds corresponding secretary of
the Baptist state convention and sec
retary of the state Mission Board.

to his home at Savannah, Ga.
Hon. R. D.Gilmer is at home rest

Mr. A. H. Stone, proprietor of the

again after an absence, of several
months in the Piedmont section.
