killed a three-year-old child of George

berry crop in Duplin county will wring
over a million dollars tocthe county

Mr. George W. Long tells us today
that the. apple crop in his neighbor
hood is almost entirely destroyed.
Mr. Long says that somebody has
killed nearly all the limbs and that
there are but few blossoms on any of

Formany years an aged white man,
who called himself Dr. Williams, has
peddled medicine in the vicinity of
Fayetteville. He was recently strick
en with paralysis and being very poor,
was placed in the county home. There
he made a strange confession. He said
his real name was Quarles, and that
years ago he deserted his wife and
children at Littleton, his home. His
family was notified and one of his
sons, now a prosperous business mn,
has taken the old man home to his

Down in Edgemont , formerly
"known as "Smoky Hollow," conditions
are changed. Where stood shanties a
few months ago, inhabited by disrepu
table people, an "immense cotton fac
tory, a bag factory, and an electric
plant are going up. The cbncere foun
dations of the cotton factory is above '
ground. The clay dug out of the foun
dation has been made into brick on the
lot and being burned right there. The
rock used in the concrete is blasted
on the premises, crushed there and
thrown into the cement tub, from
which it is dumped on the foundation

Mr. J. W. Young returned from
Asheville Tuesday, where he had gone
to meet Mr. J. W. Bastin. secretary
and superintendent of the Laurel Coal
company of Pittsburch, Ky. Mr.
Young, who is well known in this and
adjoining counties as a mica dealer
and miner, has been in correspondence
with Mr. Bastin and others, who have
become interested in the mica mines of
this county. Before leaving- today he
leased one of the largest mines in the
countyj known as the Smith mine, and
on his return about June 1 will proba
bly take charge and put a force of
hands to Work at the Ray mines. In
the past these have been the best pay
ing mines in the county and from them
have come the finest mica ever mined
