The Proximity cotton mills are on the go again after the recent strike. Only employes who signed an agreed ment not to join a labor union were al lowed to resume work. It is said that while the penitentiary will make much money this year in its farms on the Roanoke river, it is sure to lose $10,000 on what isv known as the Anson farm, near Wadesboro. Catawba county farmers grow large quantities of sweet potatoes, and the Hickory correspondent of the Charlotte Observer says the acreage will be in creased. Some of the farmers expect to raise 1,500 to 3,000 bushels. A North Carolinian has again made a noble gift to a noble cause theology and education. Mr. George Watts, of Durham, yesterday donated the prince ly sum of $30,000 to Union Theological seminary, Richmond, Va. Charlotte News. Mr. John R. Smith is the proud own. er of a rose bush that produces roses of several colors. On a single twig could be found roses of a deep red, pink and a pure white. The ready made bouquets attracted no little attention from lovers of flowers. Mount Olive Advertiser. From what we can learn the tobacco acreage is fully one-third less in Pitt county this year than last. The Wil son Times says it is one-third off in Wilson. The dry weather making. the crop late has also materially damag ed it. So there is little doubt that the tobacco crop will be little more than half as large as last year. Mr. John Bullock, of Bullock, Gran ville county, whose dwelling was mys teriously destroyed by fire a few weeks ago, came near being cremated Thurs day night. In the dead hour of the night some party, or parties, secured the fastenings of the door, saturated the roof of the building with kerosene oil and set fire to the house. Fortu nately the heat of the burning build ing awakened Mr. Bullock in time for him to escape with his life. Durham Herald. A railroad, says the Hayesville Cour ier, is being surveyed from Cornelia, Ga., to the corundum mines on Tar rurah. The road is to be built by lum ber companies for the purpose of reaching the vast tracts of timber that lie untouched in these mountains. It will enter Clay county, and some of the progressive people are hoping that some plan may be hit upon by which it might be brought down Shooting creek and along the Hiawassee valley to Murphy, where it would connect with the Southern and A. K. & N. Chero kee Scout. The strike of the operators in the weave room at the Dilling mill was not a success as far as the strikers were concerned. The company now have ov er 300 looms running, and everything is running on with very little inconven ience to the company. We are inform ed that the leaders in the strike will not be taken back into the employ of the company. Some of them had been in the employ of the company for a long time, and were counted as their most reliable hands. They struck at a very inopportune time, which will not help their cause in the eyes of the com munity, as it apparently seems as if they had intended to strike while the superintendent was away, but he re turned unexpectedly to them. Oracle. A POLITICIAN'SBAD TASTE. Graham Tribune. Josephus Daniels was invited there by the faculty and students to deliver a literary address, and was greeted by a large audience, interested in educa tion, and admirers of Whitsett insti tute, of which they justly feel proud. But Joe so seldom has an opportunity to speak to a good crowd, or has so lit tle knowledge of what a literary ad dress is, he disgusted the audience be fore he has was half through and half the people left the house. They expect ed a literary address, although his dirr ty political methods were well known to many present, who expected noth ing less than a political speech from a man of the stripe of Joe. Several staunch democrats were heard to say that if this was to be the policy of dem ocratic politicians, to cripple public schools, to carry out their plans of fraud, they would have nothing fur ther to do with them and would vote against the amendment in August. The people were disgusted at Joe and hope he will never tax another audi ence with his political falsehoods, for which he is renowned, when he is ex pected to deliver a literary address. NOTICE. DnrJnff the last three months whnt is pronounced by experts the fmost re markable piece of electrical engineer ing in the country has been accom plished, after three years of labor and six hundred thousand dollars expended In the enterprise; that is, the Santa Ana River, which comes out of the San Bernardino Mountains, has been bridled, and its power is now transmit ted to Los Angeles, some eighty-two miles distant In a word, 9,000 horse power is made to propel machinery, move street cars and illuminate and eren heat buildings in Los "Angeles, besides furnishing Illumination and power for several villages as Red lands, Riverside, Colton and Ontario beween the mountains, and the engin eers seem to agree that the most re markable feature ia this developmem of the power on the Santa Ana Rlvei Is the transmission of electricity of s high voltage over eighty miles of wire with so little loss of energy, the coin pany finding, in fact, that It can send electricity of 30,000 volts, having s working efficiency of 4,000 horse powei a distance of eight-three miles with loss of but ten per cent.. After doing Its work in the production of electrical energy, the mountain stream is gath fired into a conduit and led down th mountain side to irrigate the orchardj ind groves in San Bernardino valley Reports show that over 1500 lives have been saved through the use o One Minute Cough Cure.
