It is said that he was obout one hundred and twenty-five years old. This statement is perhaps a little over drawn, but reliable evidence has been obtained that places his age at about one hundred and five. There are two hundred and ninety- three newspapers in North Carolina. Seventy-two use "patent" matter, and the composition on eighteen is by ma chine. There are twenty six dailies, one hundred and eighty-nine weeklies, ten semi-weeklies, five bi-weeklies, for ty monthlies, nine semi-monthlies, six quarterlies, one semi-annual, five year- lies. Lightning struck a tree in front of the home of Mrs. Taylor, mother of F. N. Taylor, near Guilford, yesterday afternoon, stripping most of the bark from it. Mrs. Taylor was in the house fifty feet away, but received a severe shock. It was at first thought she was killed, but she revived later and when Mr. Taylor left her it was thought she would recover. The farmers and manufacturers of the south, above all other American in terests, should view with anxiety the turmoil in the distant east. The own ers of southern cotton mills are just be ginning to realize the vast possibilities which await them in the practically unexplored eastern lands, and the more energetic are planning commercial cru sades which are of the first importance as affecting the future welfare of the south. The farming element, which is probably giving the matter little thought or attention, is also vitally concerned, as it is their raw product which eventually finds use in the coun tries under consideration. The loss of any of our advantages in this region means serious disaster to them and a retarding of the progress now so auspiciously opening. The European nations are alive to the contingencies of the existing situation, and each is jealously guarding and pre paring to protect the interests of its commercial population. Should the present difficulties eventuate in the dis memberment of China, a by no means impossible development, such a radical upturning of conditions would ensue as to gravely jeopardize American inter ests. Americans interested in export trade, and more especially the govern ment, should keep a watchful eye on the affairs around Pekin, and if neces eary take steps to insur the continu ance of the advantages and privileges which we now enjoy under the present treaty system. o FearB the Signature of ST The Kind You Have Always Bought A bright girl renders it thus: "A thing of beauty is a boy forever." Last fall I sprained my left hip wTiile handling some heavy boxes. The doctor I called on said at first it was a slight strain and would soon be well, but it grew worse and the doctor then said I had rheumatism. It continued to grow worse and I could hardly get around to work. I went to a drug- store and the druggist recommended me to try Chamberlain's Pain Balm. I cried it and one-half of a 50-cent bottle cured me entirely. I now recommend it to all my friends. F. A. Babcock, Erie Pa. It is for sale by C. A. Haysor.
