A correspondent of the , Charlotte Ob
server says that last Friday a little
child of Mr. Hampton Fowler, who lives
three or four miles north of Monroe,
was swinging in a common swing,
when, in some manner, the child got the
rope around its neck, lost its hold on the
seat and was strangled to death.
Something over a year ago there
moved into Burnsville township, this
county, two men of the name of An
derson. The men seemed very peculiar
and resented any effort on the part of
their neighbors to make their acquaint
ance. They came to this county from
Virginia, and we are told by several
who have had some conversation with
them that they are evidently well edu
cated and intelligent. They will not
allow a woman about them, doing all
their own cooking, sewing, etc., them
selves. When they first settled in
Burnsville township they had a good
horse which was given them by a
brother, who is said to be a well to do
traveling man. Recently the horse
died, since which time they .have been
cultivating their small crop with a
milk cow. We are told that one of their
neighbors assisted them in breaking
the cow to a plow on a Sunday, and
that now she is a very good work ani
mal. They continue to milk the cow,
both night and morning, just as they
did before putting her to the plow.

Mr. J. M. Gudger, Jr., of Asheville,
was here today attending the latter

course of a speech, said that the demo
crats had given the colored people of
this state insane asylums, schools, etc.,
but the negroes had gone to the polls in
a solid phalanx and voted against them
and now they intended that these ne
groes should be disfranchised. Only
about seventy-five people attended the
convention.

STILLS CAPTURED.
Number of Seizures of Registered Dis
tilleries in June Large.
The revenue agents in Collector Har
kins' district have been particularly
busy during this month. More distil
leries have been seized than for some
time previous. Most of them were reg
istered distilleries, too. The largest
one in the district, belonging to Mr.
Taylor, near Salisbury, was seized but
released from bond later and Ymlh re
turned to work.
W. H. Reneger's distillery in Yadkin
county was seized, with thirty barrels
of spirits, one pair fine mules, a large
still and complete equipment. There
have been illicit stills and other seiz
ures taade this month, but less than
usual. The total number of regtele.ei
distilleries captured since June 1 is
seven, all for irregularities.
CONFIDENCE.
Can sbe established with very little ef
fort in proving our claim to the lowest
prices. You have bought goods before;
turn back and see what they cost you;
compare them with these quotations
and figure the saving. We never buy a
thing that we submit to you without
employing these safeguards; that is
what gives us confidence in ourselves.
The same method will give you in
creased confidence in the I X L Grocery
Store. Arm in arm with your confi
dence will come your patronage; com
pare quality with quality, price with
price; it will show you where we lead.

STREET INCIDENT.
"My dear sir," exclaimed Lawyer
Bartholomew Livingston, meeting the
Rev. Dr. Archibald Windham on the
village street, "what does this mean? I
thought you were laid up with all sorts
of bad diseases!"
"And I was," replied the reverend
gentleman, "I had an attack of indi
gestion and from that time on my
whole system has been in a disordered
condition until I began taking Hood's
Sarsaparilla which has put me on my
feet and cured all my stomach trou
bles." "I don't doubt it,' said the lawyer.
"This same medicine cured my wife of
rheumatism and my little girl of scrof
ula. When they say it's the best med
icine money can buy they only tell the
truth."
"Yes, yes, so they do," replied the
minister, and the two passed on.
A county convention of the republi
