Pruden, who is making a canvass of the state in behalf of St. Mary's school, Raleigh, has met with marked success in his work, haying raised since the 1st of February last $15,000 and thus reduced tfie debt in creased in purchasing the property un til only, $19,000 remains to be provided for of a debt which three years ago was $40,000. The prospects' for securing the entire amount are very bright. The Increased' business of the New Bern -cotton seed oil mills has necessi tated an enlargement of their works and grounds. 'Ground is now being broken for new buildings, and three new 70 saw gins, Munger outfit, will be put In; the machinery to arrive next month, and all to be ready before the new cotton begins to arrive. To pro tect against fire the plant is to have a fire pump, large tank for water and 500 feet of additional hose. The New Bern (Wooden Package works at New Bern, that burned Satur day, will be rebuilt. It was the hot test fire that New (Bern has had for a long time. The company was engaged In the manufacture of baskets and crates. v Loss $10,000; Insurance $6,500. The works were on Neuse river outside the city limits. The fire department laid forty lengths of hose from the nearest hydrant, making a line of hose over 2,000 feet long. The company em ployed thirty hands. Forty scholarships will be awarded by Trinity college to applicants for ad mission to college. A number have been placed with certain high schools, whose history, courses of study and standards of work are well establish ed. These scholarships will be awarded to applicants who are recommended by the heads of these schools as students of good character and high promise. Holders of these scholarships may be reappointed to them at the close of the freshmen and sophomore years, pro vided they maintain a high order of ex cellency. A number of scholarships will be awarded for the best examina tion papers furnished by applicants standing examinations at such a time and in such places as shall be named by the college. Provided, that the ap plicant shall make a grade that will ad mit him to the freshman class and that his character is well attested by re sponsible parties who know him. The college reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship at any time the con duct of the holder gives grounds to doubt his worthy use of it. This latter class Includes twenty scholarships, and will be awarded for examinations held July 13 at the following places, con test open to all: Hertford, Plymouth, New Bern, Weldon, Wilson, Wilming ton, Raleigh, Oxford,, Fayettevlile, Laurinburg, Monroe, Charlotte, Con cord, Greensboro, Mt. Mercer, who is oerating a copper mine near Caney Fork Bald, about fourteei miles from here, left today for Blacks- burg, S. C-, where he will visit his family for a few days. Hon. R. D. Gilmer went away today and will be on the stump from now un til JulylO continuously. He will speak in Cumberland, Brunswick, Bladen and other eastern counties. Mr. James W. Killian, who received slight injuries in the wreck at Gash's creek last week, Is at home resting. His arm is still in a sling, but he will soon be able to go on his run again. Rev. - Frank D. Hunt, whose illness was reported in this correspondence yesterday, is now entirely well. Mr. Hunt has been in the ministry eleven years, and last Sunday was the only time he ever missed a single service on account, of being sick. This is a re markable record. Court business is being rapidly expe dited by Judge Stevens. No cases ex cept of a trivial character are on the docket. Politicians are taking advantage of court week, and they are here in full force, shaking, hands with whomever they meet . viewing the sights around the city, been visiting friends here, left today for Asheville. The Waynesville postoffice has re ceived an additional street letter box, which has been erected in front of the Kenmore hotel on Main street. Prof. E. W. Gudger, wno has been teaching in the graded schools at Lit tle Rock, Ark. came home today, and will spend the summer here. Prof. Gudger is very popular in Little Rock, having just closed his three years' la bor there.
