ADAMS AT WAYNE SVILLE Simmons' Interesting Letter to "tTccle Peter." "Waynesville, July 17. Judge Spen cer B. Adams, who made a great speech here yesterday which will tell in the coming- election, left on the af ternoon train for Dillsboro. He will speak today at "Webster. Judge Ad ams makes votes wherever he goes. Our county candidates left this morning for East Fork, where they op en the campaign today. They wTill en gage in a joint discussion in each township. Hon. R. D. Gilmer, democratic can didate for attorney-general, was a close listener to Judge Adams' ad iress yesterday. Mr. Gilmer, though a partisan democrat always shows his opponents due respect and courtesy. He is first of all a gentleman. There is quite a contrast between him and some of his associates on the ticket who seem, to think that the only way to be an honest man is to join in the Sim mons tirade of abuse against any and all who prefer to do their own think ing. Mr J. "W. Ratcliff, whose death was reported in this correspondence yester day, was buried today from the Pres byterian church. Mr. Ratcliff leaves a wife and three children, a large number of relatives and a hogt of friends to mourn his demise, is re mains were laid to rest with masonic honors. He was also a first degree member of the Odd Fellows, and a number of the members of this order attended the funeral obsequies. Rev. O. S. Stringfield of Raleigh, is here in the interest of the Baptist Female university. Mr. Stringfield is a great favorite with the Baptist peo ple from one end of the state to the other. He filled the pulpit of the Baptist church last Sunday morning and evening and delighted two large congregations . Summer guests arrive on almost ev ery train and our hotels and boarding houses will soon be taxed to accommo date all the applicants. Wonder what has become of that chain letter scheme the democratic la dies of Raleigh inaugurated sometime back. That was a great thought for Mr. Simmons, and he should have in structed the secretary of the move ment to send "uncle Peter," the color ed democrat in Mftchell county whom Mr. Simmons recently wrote a personal letter urging his aid in carrying the amendment, a copy. Judge Adams now has the 'uncle Peter" letter and it is a corker. DOCKERY AT ADVANCE. Eloquent and Convincing Speech to an Appreciative Crowd. Correspondence of the Gazette. , Advance, July 16. Last Saturday, the 14th inst., the people of Advance were treated to one of the finest and most eloquent speeches ever delivered here. Hon. Claudius Dockery was the orator of the day, and in his pleas ant and gifted way told the voters of the great dangers and democratic frauds of the campaign. No one could more lucidly explain the amend ment, with its many paths and by paths, that if carried is bound to lead the worst of misery and ruin, than did Mr. Dockery, the noble son of the great Pee-Dee. He spoke ih the Academy. It was filled to its utmost capacity, about three hundred, and a large number stood at the doors and windows eager ly listening to his truthful warning. The republicans here are actively alive to the importance of the day, yes, even of the moment, and since that speech they have aid that they little expected one week ago. I have never seen a more attentive audience and af ter his two hours speech all seemed refreshed and more determined. We will give a good big majority at this precinct for the republican ticket and i and against the amendment. Work ran3 , J. -.1- j . . a"u vvcvllu is our motto. CITIZEN. Correspondence invited from those For Catalogue and other informatio PRO CHARLES D. McIViEH, President. Price spoke to eight hundred or more voters in this place. Their speeches were clear, plain and thoroughly con vincing, and were listened to with marked attention. There were some democrats in the audience, who after hearing that great issue of the day, the amendment, explained, agreed that it was deceptive, and. a wrong, and they declared they could not support it. For years and perhaps never be fore were the republicans so anxiously aroused and determined as they are in this most important campaign. You can safely mark Davie county 00 against the amendment on the set ting of the sun August 2, 1900. AN OLD VOTER. THE BEAUTY SEEKER, Women on the quest for (beauty per haps do not realize that one1 rousing headache will knock a whole day from their lives. There are several kinds of this distressing ailment com mon bilious neadach-, brain headache brought on 'by overwork, neuralgic ache brought on by a cold, and various seri ous headaches which precede different illnesses such as fevers. For bilious headaches open-air exer cise is the cure, and if that is impossi ble, gymnastic work and singing are !the ext best. In everyday life we do not properly attend to our respiration. If one observes closely she will see tnat singers are younger, fresher ani pret tier for their years than women who have no voice. The inflation of the lungs is a life-giving exercise that af fects the whole system. Fifteen minutes singing the scales would ward off many a headache arising from sluggish liver. Brain fatigue induces a headache that is unbecoming, for it takes at least three days to recover one's locks after an attack of it. Vary your occupation, and do something that can be classed as manual laJbor. Diet also should be chosen with a view to the demand on the system by the brain. A woman has not the vitality to be beautiful without the necessary food to keep up the circulation of the blood and the health of the tissues. To eat wise ly is the hardest thing possible for a grown-up person to learn. And it is ex actly the lack of this which destroys good looks the soonest Father Time is out of the running when compared with lobster salad, hot breads ana too many sweets. u Al" TABLETS. for all UNINARY DISORDERS.
