The attruendimient to strike out the appropriation for special mail facilities was defeated. The house .committee on elections No. 1, decided to take cognizance of the pe titions and charges filled against Del egate Wilcox of Hawaii. George D. Gear of Hawaii, who makes the charges was questioned on law points. The memibers were agreed that the matter should foe cleared up by inquiry and it was arranged to take Mr. Gear's testimony and that of Mr. Wilcox. Chairman Southard Kf the housa committee on coinage today received from W. J. Bryn the latter' s view of the pending bill before the house mak ing th'e standard silver dollar redeem able in gold. After thanking the committee for the courtesy of inviting his .views:, Mr. Bryan says in part: "The bill has a double ;pumpose. First to convert standard silver dollars into scubsidiary coin, and second, to make silver dollars redeemable an g3d on demand. In discussing .the subject, however, it will be more logical to con sider the latter proposition first as re demption is only a step toward retire ment. "There is no necessity far redemption The legal tender law will maintain the parity between gfald coin and silver dol lars as long1 as both can be used to an unlimited extent in the payment of public revenues and private debts. A dispacth from Baku says 500 persons perished. in the. conflagration which began yes- day in the petroleum fields. The flames are again beyond control. Berlin, Feb. 7. It is feared the fa talities resulting from the great petro leum fire at Baku will reach into the hundreds. The full extent of the dis aster is not known. Baku, Russian Trans-Caucasian, Feb. 7. A fire broke out in the mag azines of the Caspian and Black Sea company, which contained six million poiads of petroleum. The conflagration resulted in great loss of life and wide spread damage. The flames spread to the other depots, having a capacity of twelve million poods of naptha, which poured out like a stream of lava;' inun dating and setting fire to the dwellings of the wtarkment, which were totally destroyed. iMany persons perished. Twelve charred 'bodies have been found and upwards of fifty people are terribly burned. Four hundred families lost everything they possessed. The mag azines are still burning and the neigh boring reservoirs are in great danger. A general panic prevails.
