THE MARKETS BY TELEGRAPH Yesterday's Quotations- on the New York Exchanges" Chicago Grain Market SOME DECLINES AND SOME GAINS Highest, Lowest and Closing Prices For Active Stocks Cotton Market Point. By private -wire to Mtuirjhy & Co., stock brokers, 11 Church street. New York, April lT.This morning's stock market opened with a highly novel tendency declines appearing in various quarters many of wfolch were (extensive andi predominating', but on the other hand a nu-miber cf stocks ad vanced rapidly in face of the tendency of the remainder of the list. This was notably the rule of Missouri, Kanas & Texas common and ip referred, St. Paul and San Francisco issues. 'Dealings in the last named' were stimulated (by re ports .published this 'morning that the company had acquired the Mexican Central. Pennsylvania was also not ably firm among the higher priced is sues. There were very reactionary, movements in the Erie issues, Northern Pacific and Burlington. After Ate open ing the Erie stocks developed a firmer tone however. In .the Industrial quar ter American Smelting was , conspicu ously firm while there was further ma terial .decline in the United Steel cor poration issues on account of the threatened labor troubles at Pittsburg. The docal traction stocks were fairly active and were dealt in generally .be low yesterday's final figures. The deal ings and the fluctuations in Amalga mated Copper were not iparticularly active. Sugar Refining was fairly ac tive at about yesterday's final figures. Among the sipecialties, T..C. & I. was firm while Con. Gas declined notwith standing fche announcement this morn ing of a decision favorable to the com pany in so-called Astoria case. London furnished a lower (range cf prices for our stocks as a rule, the Kansas anid Texas issues being an exception and foreign -houses sold quite heavily here upon the opening of business. Apart from the labor trouble threatened in in various parts there was little in thi morning's news bearing on. the general market. At the same time there seem ed to be quite a general disposition to reattzfe profits and the bearlehly disc ed room traders took advantage of this opportunity to hammer iprices vigor ously. As noted the initial dealings re flected a decidedly feverish and excited ton, but with the course of the mora ine a rather firmer tone developed, and some shocks recovered rapidly. Amal gamated Copper being notaibly strong. Total sales for day 1,600,00. -CKS. Hiafh Iw Clrws Am. S. & R 64 62i 634 Am. S. & H. pfd .. ..98 97 98 Ami. Copper 126 123 124 C S 66 64 64 Am. Sug.
