The stock (mar ket opened displaying: the same een eral characteristics wMch marked y j terday's dealings ; that is to say the trading1 was in enormous wlume and resulted in few common and extensive advances. It was evident, however, right at the opening that profit-taking sales Were being conducted ia tremen dous volume and. on this account man? stocks sold- off sharply after the initial deaWngs. The most extensive advances at the opening were soared) in Atdhdso St. Paul, Rock Island, O. & W. and Union Paciflc. Normhern Pacific was decidedly reactionary, reflecting the tendency of that stock In the London market. Apart from. Northern Pacific however, American stofks .were shown at sufostialqtiail gains in the ''London and foreign houses again boughtj heavily here upon the opening of business. Out side of the railway list the chief feat ures of the market were the united States steel stocks, which sold at the iiighest prices they have yet! attained' and in 'Which transactions of almost un precedented volume were con-ducted. The Anthracite coal stocks were notice ably strong this morning with" very hea vy "transactions in the 'Brie and Reading issues. Very little was done in the in dustrial quarter except for 'the hea vy transactions in the limited States Steel. Among the specialties Amal gamated Copper was strong al-d West ern union snowed some disposition toward) recovery. Other notably firm features of the railway list than tho3e mentioned were Texas Paicific, the Southern Railway shares and L. & N. High Anjg. Copper .. .. 124 Am. Smelt 60 C. S 76 Am. There was a slight Jfrost 4ast night but not sufficieat to iinjure any grow ing crops or fruit. No serious damage was done by the frost of last week and It is oredicted that the largest fruit crop for many years in -Rowan' will be produced this year. Salisbury Sun. There is every Indication that Rowan will produce an unusually large quan tity of wheat this year. The reports from' various sections of the county on the cereals are excellent. Mr. James Trexler has eleven acres near Salis bury which he thinks. will yield . 25 bushels -per acre. Salisbury Sun. An undivided one half interest in the old "Washington House" will be sold at auction next Monday. It Is said that from the steps of this house George Washington made su speech when .passing through Salisbury. This is a very valuable iproiperty and several parties who intend putting a handsome building on it, will bid on the lot. Salisbury Sun. The Commissioner of Agriculture! is quoted as saying that the sales of fer tilizer tax tags up to this season are about 22 per cent, greater than they were to the same period last year. At one time, about three weeks aigo, they were 30 .per cent, greater. The hearing of the case of the Amer ican Talc Co. vs. the U. S. Mineral Co., which was begun at Hayesville before Judge Shaw, has been concluded at Murphy. It was an aipiplication by the plaintiff for an injunction to pre vent the defendant from working what is known as the Hlllyear Talc mine, in this county. His Honor de clined the motion for an Injunction and required the defendant to give bond to secure the rents and profits to whomsover may be ultimately decreed to foe the lawful owner. Monday afternoon Mr. J. J. Evans displayed wonderful nerve. He 'went out to his farm a few nuttes from town arter a load of -wood n He jput the corn in a bas? and "olaWi it on top of the load of wood and m. his seat on the bag. Soon after start ing back to town his horse stermed in a hole and' tumbled, which threw him headlong off his high seat on top of the load. In the fall Ms left arm. groken just above the wrist. After the doctor was through with him he got his supper and came on to the Reflector office to spend the evening as is his usual custom. 'And he was not heard to complain at all. Greenville Reflector. ; Six negro prisoners confined in Guil ford county jail made a daring and suc cessful dash for Hberty" about 10 o'clock Monday morning, and If ft had not been for ithe alarm given by Mr. Rees son, who waa in the jail yard and saw them going out of this gate, Jt is prob able that all of the prisonem on the first floor would have escaped. The outside and two inner Vioors had been left open to allow a servant to sweep This left only one door, the one at the end of the corridor fastened and Rob ert Ford, a (young negro Ixw waha his arm through the bars to the knob, unlocked it and opened the door. Dep uties Jones and iWeathie-rley arrested one of the men about 11:30 near iBen boWs mill. He has been indisposed for a few. days and was unable to go the gait the others did. iBEWARD OF A COUGH.
