PAGE 5 IT THE MARKETS BY TELEGRAPH Yesterday's Quotations or the New York Exchanges ChicagoGrain Market STOCKS STRONG AND ANIMATED Higest, Lowest and Closing Prices for Active Stocks otton Market Point. The following -were the ruling quota tions in the exchange today: By private wire to Murphy & Co. New York. May 16. The stock mar ket opened strong and animated this morning, its tendency being derived in part from the London market, where extensive advances were shown in American stocks. The morning news comprised no important developments bearing upon the market. At the same time, the news that the dispute over Northern Pacific affairs was in process of settlement continued to exercise a good influence and it was also felt that notwithstanding the exports of gold the receipts of currency from the inte rior would drsure stability in the looal market. Flattering agricultural out look . was also a factor of weight in the dealings. The most active features of the market at the opening were Union Pacific, the Erie issues, Southern Paci fic, St. Paul, the Atchisons, Missouri Pacific and the Reading stocks. The last named were notably strong also. Among the specialties sharp advances .were scored in Amalgamated Copper, International Power, and a lesser rie was noted in Western Un.on. The local traction stocks were rather more animated than for sometime an J Man hattan was decidedly strong. Tne United States Steel stocks were shown in the early cables at material ad vances in the London market and they likewise opened strong and active. Trading elsewhere in the Industrial quarter however, was limited and Su gar Refining was somewhat reaction ary. After the early dealings the re cent advance appeared to induce profit taking sales and the market yielded in consequence and there appeared fur thermore a resumption although on a small scale, of the liquidation which has :ien in progress since Tnurs Jay's violent break. 1 ' Amg. The dry weather conditions which have been dominating MM If POISOH OAK, poison ivy, BARBER'S ITCH, J LEAD and BRASS POISOMMG, ETG. open, we are much more liable to be affected by Poison Oak and Ivy and other dangerous plants. Workers in brass, copper, lead and zinc have their health im paired and the blood supply poisoned through the absorption of fine particles of these metals and the acids used in polishing and cleaning them. Inhaling the fumes of lead give painters that pallid, waxy appearance of the skin. Barber's Itch is another disease that reaches the blood through the skin, and is a most obstinate One when it becomes firmly fixed in the system. After the poison has reached the blood and been disseminated throughout the system it is too late to resort to local applications. In many cases the blood is affected simultaneously with the appear ance of the rash or eruption on the skin, and all efforts should be directed to the purification and building up of the blood. Ugly eruptions and sores will continue to break out m spite of salves, washes, soaps or other external treatment. S. S. S. is especially recommended-for poisons of this' character. So com pletely does it destroy the effects of the Oak and Ivy that there is no possibility of its reappearance, and it is equally as efficacious1 in brass or lead poisoning or Bar ber's Itch ; building up and purifying' the blood and driving out of the circulation impurities of every kind, and removing every blemish, sore or eruption from the skin. There is no substitute for S. S. S. ; it is the only purely vegetable blood purifier known, and the safest and best in all constitutional or blood diseases. Our Medical Consultation Department. THB SWIFT SPECIFIC COMPANY, ATiInTA.A. factor in the market was again the feature thi? morning. Rains fell at Paris, Denison, VFort Worth, Houston, Texas, and Oklahoma and Fort Smith, but theseing within the region where., the crop has been suffering the bulls were able to maintain control and bears were correspandingly depressed although; predicting that the acquisi tion of moisture was not cutting any important figue except in te minds of people who want to see higher prices. The best informed people in the trade who have no interest in the mar ket dissent from this view. The situ ation prior to May, it is contended, makes moisture this month absolutely necessary to give the plant a good start and while the outlook may be less se rious it is asserted there is no use dis guising the fact that bulls 'have the best of the situation so far as crop prospects are concerned. Another im ixxrtant fact an, sn. not to be over looked is the appearance of boll weavil ; in many sections to an alarming ex tent and this causes much alarm, much cotton being plowed up.
