EARTHQUAKE SHAKES
UP OHIO TOWNS
Ironton O., May 17. About 1 o'clock
this morning the city felt an earthquake
shock passing directly from west to
east. There was a succession of vio
lent undulations, almost merged, dast
30 seconds.
Many residents were roused from
sleep and not a few were nauseated by
the rocking of the earth.
Wellsville, O., May 17. This morning
at 3 o'clock this city .was visited by a
most pronounced earthquake shock.
The first disturbance was of sufflden't
force to awaken many persons. It rwas
followed by two hard convulsive shak
ings of the earth that at mamy places
displaced houshold furniture.
It was the severest earthquake shock
followed by two hard convulsive shakv
ings like leaves. Hundreds tt people
rushed to the streets thinking there had
been an explosion. No serious damage
was done, but many chimneys were
broken.
Janesville, Wis., May 17. A shock of
earthquake was felt here at 1 this morn
ing. Huntington, W. Va., May 17. A (se
vere earthquake shock was felt hero
at 2 this morning.
Portsmouth, O., May 17. An earth
quake shock is reported here at 1:30
this morning.

ty Interest.
It is well knowta that I am heartily in
accord with the Register in the views
we entertain in regard to the methods
of the election, (by which the adminis
tration! of this county is in the hands
that hold it at present. I hope never to
be so old. or feetle as to hesitate to ex
press my opinion of the disgrace brought
upon this country by an election of that
kind. But we must recognize the fact
that good often comes out of evil, but
never for those who do the evil. So
in this case, I, not being in any degree
responsible for that unjust election,, reap
the great advantage of being freed from
a most burdensome office, while if my
mend teed did do any of that little
election work, he is albundantly pun
ished by having on his shoulders this
oppressive business.
So my 'policy is to let by-gones be
by-gones. Accept loyally the result of
any election however dishonorably it
may have been conducted, and do my
auty as a citizen, by supporting th?
"powers that be" in all worthy efforts
for the public weal. I can best do this
by avoiding criticims of political opon-
eints .who are in office so far as it is pos
sible to do so, and I am most glad to
testify that I have seen nothing in Mr.
Reed's conduct thus far to call for my
criticism. If the charges madie bv the
Register are well founded, and he is be
coming the willing tool of his DartT
ibosses, instead of the people's servant,
then am very sorry that soich is the
case, and will oonttoue to hope ithat it
is a mistake on ipart of the Register
until I am constrained to conclude dif
ferently. If the Register is right, how
ever, (Mr. Reed will come to grief
soon enough without any aid! (from
me ia that direction.
INow about the roads: If the force was
moved fom Hominy (leaving that road In
complete, it was certainly a great error
in judgment; but that move having
been already made, the error cannot
be amended by committing another
equally great. The Register andT en
tirely agree in saying, as it doubtless
wiE say with 'me, "Never incur the 'ex
pense of a chaicge of location so long as
work can be advantageoously done from
the present location." It perhaps was
wrong to move fromi Hominy; it cer
tainly will toe wrong ts move from Swan
namoa at present. Two wrongs will nev
er make a right.
Respectfully, '
T. W. PATTON.
