Etecidedly irreg ular tendencies characterized the stock market this morning in the early read ings. For the most part recessions, some of which were fairly extensive, took place from yesterdays final fig ures. The reactionary tendency was the most pronounced in the .Brdes, South ern Pacific and Ontario and "Western, which were the leaders at the close of business yesterday In respect of strength and activity, but nothing that was new bearing upon these stocks "or the general situation developed over nnight. London furnished irregular changes for American stocks with de clines predominating but the cables re ported that with the course of business session there -was a sharp improvement in the American quarter. In the in dustrial quarter the United States steel issues were strong and active. Sugar refining was dealt in around yesterdays final prices. A material ad vance -was noted in the American car and foundry issues, and the tobacco stocks were very strong, notably for American Tobacco. Among the spe cialties C. F. & I. was strong -While the Capper stocks were comparatively dull. . The market developed rather more general steadiness with the course of business session, but the deal ings still reflected moderate pressure from renewed profit realizing sales. Business was in fairly large volume and was well distributed. In the cotton market this morning there was an unexpected improvement at- Liverpool giving a fresh start to local support. Prices opened 3 to 4 points higher and cables were watched with great inter est. It was stated that shorts at Man chester were on the run and there was general scramble to get under cover. Undoubtedly the bureau report of the week was making some impression abroad and people were recognizing the unfavorable showing. Liverpool is al ways recognized as taking a more con servative and Important view of the crop situation than people on this side hence New York readily followed af ter her. The crop certainly has been doing "better of tate 'but It onust not be overlooked , that it has been doing worse than poorly. It certainly la not overcoming backwardness to the ex tent that it should ihave ibeen. Hints of a big combine which would boom the market later on were plentiful. Liverpool ; was 1 to 2 points higher. Port receipts estimated 7,000 against 3,500 last year. COTTON. N. Y. Spot 8 " .
