The London mar ket was favorably affected toy the re duction of half of one per eent. dn the hank of England's rate of discount as announced today and dn consequence American stocks were quoted at a somewhat higher range of prices in comparison with the local final figures of yesterday. Partly In consequence of this circumstance and also 'because of the subsidence of .the uneasiness regarding- the status of Rock Island af alrthe local stock market opened strong and fairly active. Rock Island again shot up quite rapidly in the earlv dealings but subsequently the stock re ceded to about yesterday's final figures. Particularly strong and active feature upon the opening of business were Pennslyvanla, (Wisconsin 'Central, Southern Pacific, LouisvilJe & Nash ville and Norfolk and Western. Union Pacific was also dealt In quite heavily somewhat above yesterday's final prices. In the Industrial quarter fur ther advances -were shown in the To bacco stocks and the United States Steel issues were firm on large deal ings. The local traction etortra ,wrP fairly 8'm &n( gpm particular strength appearing in Southern Pacific was on the repitition of rumors re cently current that the stock wa to be very soon placed upon a regular divi dend paying basis. Nothing else that was novel or definite attended the movement in the other stocks cited. Evidences of quite aggressive manipu lation "were noted in various quarters of the market and commission business was not upon a very large scale. There was selling on the weather report which showed good rains all along jtha Mississippi valley, the lake region and the Upper Missouri valley. The storm this week has now covered the entire winter and spring wheat country ex cepting Kansas The weather was de cidedly colder in the northwest TVith killing frost in spring wheat States was a factor in the trading. The opening of the market was quiet and there -was some selling during the morning, owing to the improved weather conditions and the continuation of liberal receipts. Wheat was weak in the afternoon ral lying a little on reports that the Mis souri State report was 14 points lower. The close was at the lowest. The corn market. was quiet and gen erally lower. There was some selling on the freedom of the movement and the market was also influenced by the heaviness in wheat, although the cold weather in the Northwest was not a favorable .condition. ism mmm&i vi Chicago & North-Western RallwujJ leave Chicago daily for Milwaukee, Mai ison, Green Bay, Fond dn Lac, Oshkosh Escanaba, Ishpeming, Marquett, Asi land, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Dulut and all point in Wisconsin and the Cop per country. New York, June 6. Texas is credited with six per cent, increase acage on the nvhole the showing is bullish and such is the view taken of it both here ana at Liverpool. The effect here was an opening market of 6 to 7 points ad vance ana eany caDies were corres pondingly better. More rain in the At- latic 'States strengthened the hull po sition moisture again being reported at Augusta, Columbus, Ga., Montgomery, Anniston, Vicksburg, Palestine, New 'Orleans and Atlanta. There has 'been thus far no rampant 'buying but a gradual change of sentiment and a dis position to enter the market on the -first confirmatory evidence of crop being in the poor shape alleged by many and be lieved by many, who will not admit It. Without good weather conditions this month expectation is for a bull market 'Of and even with such conditions the -situation is regarded as favoring a tnigher level of prices when we compare them with previous years. The first signs of an activity on the part of spin ners cannot fail to awaken general in terest and the helief is that ttois long looked for revival cannot be much Ion er deferred.
