EVENTS OF INTEREST IN THE LAND OF THE SKY Gleanings From the Columns of Local Papers in Var ious Towns of State. Mr.. J.- J,. Richardson, a leading farm er .of the CurriesviUe neighborhood, was In tojcvii Saturday, and. in speaking- ef the hindrance of hawks to the poultry business of the county, said that since last spring one year ago he had caught on his plantation twenty hawks in traps. The traps are ordinary steel traps, which were nailed to the tops of posts. Carthage Blade. Did anybody ever hear of crows catching young chickens? What they do with the chickens is not known, but all this spring crows have been darting down in Mr. A. A. Hoover's barnyard and carrying off young chickens. They are beating the hawks at the hawks' own game ten to one. There is no mistake about this, because they have frequently been seen in the act of grab bing up the chickens and flying off with them. Newton Enterprise. Last Tuesday morning J. M. Ham mock, of this place, came very near losing his life in Mrs. S. W. Brewer's well. He had gone down to remove a lot of rock, a blast having been made the evening before, and was engaged at the bottom of the well, when be was heard to breathe heavily and was also seen to fall forward on his face in a small hole of water. (Messrs. John Abernathy, Geo. Brewer, and Paul Williams went down at once and put him in the tub and had him' 'drawn up quickly. He had been overcome with gas and was nearly dead, but. Dr. Cha pin applied the necessary retoratlves and he soon revived. It was a close call. Chatham Citizen. On last Tuesday afternoon, Zeb, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Z. F. Rush, Jr., while blowing a toy whistle, hap pened to have the misfortune to swallow It. Physicians were called in but could not locate the whistle. On Sunday morning after being hardly able to swallow for three days, he was driven to High Point, where with hie mother, he boarded the train for Salisbury. Dr. J. W. Long, of that place, located the whistle in the lower part of his throat by using an X-ray machine. No oper ation was necessary to extract it, as the doctor worked it out with his hand. Ash'boro Courier. i In the western part of Davie county, the wife of Mr. Tank Gai.ther (became unbalanced and the unfortunate woman slipped away from home and wandered about in the woods for six days with out food before she could be found. Hundreds engaged in the search, but succeeding rainy days greatly Impeded the work. The unfortunate.. woman kept away from all dwellings inever travel ed a road, but little in tne fleTd, sought the most dense forest, and oh approach ing a stream, although so 'small that she might step across, would pull off her shoes and "waxFe, thus leaving shoe tracks on the other side. .When found she was sitting on some bark with her apron stretched between a bush and a tree over her head for shelter. It was evident that she could not have travel ed much more if she had not been found. It was feared, as she had been gone six days and as a storm of rain had fallen every day but one after she left home, that she might be found a corpse. Winston Republican. Of all the States of the American Union, North Carolina ha9 the smallest per cent, of foreign born inhabitants, the per centage being .007. In New Tork 54.8 per cent of the population is of foreign birth, in Massachusetts 60.5. while in North Dakota 80 out of each 100 inhabitants are foreign born. The average for the United States is 14.77. Or to put it in different form: Go to New Tork and more than hal of those you meet were born in foreign coun tries. In Massachusetts, call upon 100 people and you will find only 40 of them native Americans. Or take 100 aver age Americans and you will find that 14 of them are of foreign birth. In North Carolina, however, if you pick out 1,000 people and range them in rows of 100 each, you will find seven of the rows with but a single foreign born person and 300 in the remaining rows all na tive Americans. In no other State in the Union must you pass 100 people be fore finding one person of foreign birth. ing a single person of foreign birth. These thoughts are suggested by the statement that North Carolina's com missioner of immigration, Hon. John W. Thompson, finding his work brought forth no fruit, has resigned and will engage in other business hereafter. Exchange. A PROFESSION FOR WOMEN. liandscape gardening Is a calling tha must be learned the same as any other A young man would ibe , expected to de vote some years to its study and prac tice (before he could .be entrusted with the commission of work of much im portance, and there is no reason why less should be expected of a woman. Good work is demended, and in order to meet the demand there must be thor ough knowledge of all its details, and this can only come through practical experience. If a woman has aptitude for the profession and is willing to serve an apprenticeship at it, as a man must, there is no reason why she should not physically strong.
