New York, April 7. The stock mar ket at the start showed considerable irregularity and the International shares were lower than the London 2 p. m. quotations. Announcement of large gold exports (by tomorrow's fast steamers chilled the speculation, which h gradually became weaker as the rate for money began to rise. The gold ex ports amount to a sum nearly equil alent to the total surplus reserves of the banks brought about by last week's heavy reduction in cash. Although re ports from crop regions were again satisfactory the speculation was domi nated by monetary conditions and na turally apprehension was expressed that loans would command considerable higher figures. The depression in the standard railway stocks was most pro nounced in St. Paul and on realizations on speculative purchases. The price lost 2. Rock Island lost about 2, L. & N. sold off 2 and in addition to the general influences the stock was unfa vorably affected by announcement of sale of a large amount of treasury stock. Union and Missouri Pacific lost over 1 per cent each. Northwest lost nearly 4 per cent and declines of 1 per cent were numerous. Notwithstanding the general weakness there was a spir ited movement in Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic particularly in preferred which sold up 2 and in spite of a later reaction showed a net gain of iy2. Wis consin Central preferred also developed exceptional strength, and there was a firm tone to Alton issues, and most of the time to Wabash stocks. The local tractions early developed strength and held its ground well in the face of gen eral reaction. Total sales stocks today 634,400. Bonds $4,529,000. New York, April: 7. The foreign cot ton markets show something of the misapprehension under which the Euro pean trade. has previously labored with regard to the size of this years Ameri can crops. In my experience Liverpool is an exactingly hard market to move, but once they get started in Europe they generally continue buying for a period of about thirty days. I there fore look for no change in sentiment abroad for a long time yet, and if American holders of cotton are wise they can demand and secure very much higher prices from Europe for it. I have a cable this morning from a well informed firm at Harve, Fftance, which says that the stocks of cotton at the mills on the 31st of March were abour thirty per cent less than the year while consumption is twelve per cent more than last year. If these figures are correct, and there seems no reason to doubt their accuracy, we must inevita bly see ten cent cotton in America in a comparatively short time. I cont'nue to advise purchases and suggest that my friends ignore all reports that I am selling. From every quarter and re port from my own brokers I get these reports. They are evidently put out by interested parties who believe rumors to the effect that I am selling will de ter others from buying. The cotton mar ket is now bigger than any one man, or any one set of men and it makes no difference what I may do or what any one else may do. There is not enough cotton to go around and those who hold it are sure to derive very much higher prices than are at present obtainable. THEODORE H. PRICE. COTTON. New York spot 9 3-16c. High. Low. The chamber oi commerce at a meeting last night appointed a committee of five to take up the strike matter with a view of settlement. This committee added' the names of five gentlemen who con duct businesses in the factory district. These ten met today and arranged a general conference. The entire situation will be gone over in the hope to avert a strike. Good results are doubtful, as the labor leaders insist that the operators have grievances. If the strike goes into ef fect at the King mill Monday morn ing all miHs in Augusta, as well as those at Bath, Vauoluse, Aiken, War ren ville and Graniteville, in South Carolina, will close and remain so, the officials say, until all employes sign pledges repudiating textile unions. Many operatives foresee privations ahead and do not want a strike. . . The Augusta factory Is non-unfon and employes have petitioned Presi dent Phlnizy not to lock them out.
