eral Gomez ascended to. the roof of the
nalace where he was accorded a great
reception. " General Wood" personally j
lowered the American -colors, which j
were saluted and with his own hands
hoisted the, republic's flag,, as an act of
the United States, Gomez assisting.
. General Wood and his staff and the
American troops embarked immediate
ly after the hoisting of the Cuban flag,
and American ships steamed out ofc.the
harbor.
At the time the transfer of goVern-
ment took place in 'Havana, General
Whiteside, at Santiago, turned over his
authority to his Cuban successor and
'sailed away with the American cavalry !

thousand publio carriages in Havana
and, this morning, each one of ithem
