Accord ing to the latest advices received here, Fred Hardy, the Unimak island mur derer, was hanged today at Nome, President Roosevelt having declined to interfere with the sentence of the court. Hardy would have been langed a year ago 'but for the fact that Judge Wickersham stayed the execution for 12 months, pending the hearing of an appeal in the United States. The ap peal was unsuccessful. The crime of which Hardy was con victed was brutal in the extreme. He shot down in cold blood and robbed Con and Folrence Sullivan and P. J. Rooney, who were his companions on a prospecting expedition to Unimak island. At the time of hiB trial Hardy declared he was a relative of for mer Postmaster General John Wanna maker. The Last Resort. A near relation of the late Bafon Munchausen on the maternal side, lineally descended from Ananias and Sapphira, was telling a party of friends about treeing a bull buffalo in one of the great trees of California. "That story lacks likelihood," re marked the man who knows every thing, like so many other men. "The buffalo belongs to the ruminant fam ily, has four or five stomachs and walks on hoofs. It has no claws at all and could no more climb a tree than a Jersey cow." "As a general proposition you are right," said the story teller, with per fectly unruffled mien, "but this case wa quite exceptional. We were after : he buffalo j-ith four of the most vicious dogs that I ever knew. One v:i8 a boar hound, cne a great dane. one a p-ovie. or wolfhound, and the o'.her a registered bulldog, with jaws lil:o wrought iron. Well, they brought the buffalo to bay at the foot of the i.'i;-; ir; and pressed him so blamed anrd that ho just had to climb. That was his only salvation." New York Times. Where Women May Not Pray. There is a practically universal pro hibition against women praying in Mo hammedan countries. They are not admitted beyond the thresholds of the mosques: but, on the other hand, the Koran distinctly encourages women to i.i'r.y ia private. Some Hindoo congre gations den j the privilege of prayer to their women altogether. Among 'the Ainu, a race supposed to be the abo rigines of Japan, women vare not per mitted to pray or offer sacrifice except in rare cases as the deputies of their husbands. The reason for this prac tice is that rtie Ainu women are not supposed to possess souls, and there fore their prayers would be quite un availing. Among the natives of Mad agascar women are permitted to pray, but only to the powers of evil, a kind of intercessory prayer. Only men are permitted to address prayers directly to the Supreme Being. Resisting? Power. Doctors tell us in these days of germ and toxins that the thing that counts most in a case is the "resisting power" of the patient. Some men and women can pass through an epidemic or even be inoculated with its' peculiar poison germs-and yet shake off infection, un harmed. Others apparently just as healthy succumb to the first contact with disease and sink under it in spite of the best nursing. "Resisting power" is an individual affair, and many sur prises come to doctor and nurses as the frail looking patient pulls through and the robust seeming one dies. Medi cines can only aid the "resisting pow er." They can never take its place. It determines in the end life or death in every case. Scott in!)
