There is a considerable ainount of work to be done in prepara tion for handling a 'body of about 800 delegates, but all the details will be completed by tomorrow. Mr. Mitchell is also engaged in preparing his address to the convention. If precedents are followed, the convent will be held behind closed doors and Mr. Mitchell's address may not be made public. It is probable, however, he will speak before the (doors are closed. There was no de velopment today in any phase of the strike. Worrall's great pano ramic picture of the plateau of Ashe ville was on view at the Cincinnati fall festival twelve days. During this time between 250,000 and 300,000 people saw it. The advertising value of this to Ashe ville is hard to estimate. In fact, it cannot toe estimated at all, but it is safe to say that no other single agency has accompanied as much for the city and vicinity in a like length of time. This means that $4000 is ready in large sub scriptions. The general public can easily raise this amount. All that is necessary, as has been stated in these columns, is for every man to do his simple duty. If the amount is not raised (by Novem ber 15 work on the building will be stopped. Mitchell said that to his per sonal knowledge Morgan has been try ing to end the strike since his return from Europe. If others were as fair and reasonable as Morgan, the strike would have ended long ago. Both Mor gan and President Cassatt, he declared, were working for the end of the strike when Roosevelt made his last success ful move. "Morgan,", he added, "could not very well have been forced to do something he had been trying to achieve for sev eral weeks. I make 'this statement in Justice to Mr. Morgan. I had no quar rel with him and we wish none. We dp not fear him, but prefer his friend ship if he is willing to give it to us.' It required great finesse and diolo macy on Mr. Worrall's part to get the picture into the art exhibition, on ac count of the lateness of his application. The original plan of his tour was quite different, but he saw at once that more was to be accomplished by getting the picture exhibited there than by carry ing it around from city to city. It would have been impossible to exhibit it at the festival but for the previous visit to Chicago, and the resulting encomi ums from recognized authorities. The Hoosier Grain Drill Used on any plantation to plant any of the small grains will prove a splendid investment. Besides the increase in grain yield sown In drills, it is also a great labor saver. Come in and see it and let us explain its many good points. Wilkesbarre, Oct. 18. Reports re ceived at the miners' headquarters up to a late hour tonight show that most of the delegates elected to the conven tion have been instructed to follow Mitchell's advice. This Is tantamount to a resumption of work within the week. On the whole, It is computed 80 to 85 per cent, of the strikers will be pledged to vote in favor of Mitchell's plan to have the strikers return to work as soon as possible. Much of the ap parent opposition to the plan is due to the fact that some of the strikere do not understand the conditions on which they are going back. It is believed FUHSTON SAYS IT IS A PERSONAL ATTACK Denver, Oct. 18. General Funston in an interview today vigorously resented the recent adoption of resolutions by the Central Prohibition club, attacking him for favoring ithe army canteen. A bigamist sixty-two years old was found among the inmates of the Soldiers' home today and having admitted his guilt, when confronted wTith proof, took the hint and vacated his room at the institution without delay. The man is John Cot ton, who came from Wayne county five years ago, stating that his wife was dead. Three years later he married a widow in Wake county and visited her Occasionally. He continued living at the home. He now has a child about a year old. Today a letter was .received from the Wayne county wife inquiring if her husband, John Cotton, were liv ing. This led to the exposure of the bigamist and he owned up after being told that denial was useless. It is said tha,t so narrow is the line of division between the parties in the rigsdag that the approval of the treaty practically depends upon the state of health of one or two members, and it is intimated that if the measure is to succeed at this session the government must press it to a vote before one of the convalescents is able to return to his executive duties and cast an ad verse vote. ;! ' I 'J, Nevertheless, even should the move ment toward cession fail at this meet ing of the rigsdag, it is not doubtedi that in the very near future the islands f must become the property of the I United States. It cannot be too clearly ; stated, however, that the United States government has not the slightest idea of using compulsion to this endt being well satisfied that the people of Den mark will be eventually moved by purely economic considerations to dis pose of the islands. It is well known here, just ias was stated in the rigsdag, that atjpresent the islands are not self supportm!: - and. 'the Danish govern ment, if it decides to retain possession, is confronted nvitn tne necessity ox paying money out of the national treasury to heljp the islanders to sus tain their local government. It is real ized that in the event of cession to the United States this state of affairs, as to deficiency in revenues, 'would prob ably continue for sometime, necessita ting the extension of some measure of support by the United States govern ment until such time as the islands de velop to the point of pay their way. Much is expected of free trade between the islands and the United States in the development of the insular indus tries, but on the other hand the very great increase of trade with the United States would, under free trade, de prive the island treasury or. revenues now collected on imports from the United States and compensation must be sought from some other source. of the recent French racing scandal, a number of American and English sharpers have been expelled from France.
