Presi dent Roosevelt cast his vote in the fifth district of Nassau county a few minutes before li o'clock. As he turned from the booth the president said: "I haved one all I can do now. 1 have performed my duty and exercised i my privilege as an American -citizen, and I shall now await the full re turns." He then started on a long drive with Mrs. Roosevelt. It was 10:48 o'clock" when the president and Mrs. Roose velt drove up to the voting place. A big crowd had been awaiting his ar rival for an hour. He was joined by Assistant Secretary Loeb and James K. Gracie, an uncje of the president. Mr.. Roosevelt cordially greeted sev eral of his personal friends and ac quaintances in the crowd and then pro ceeded to the voting place, which was in a hall over a fish market and a 'Chinese laundry. After shaking hands with the judges and clerks of electicm, -the president cast his ballot, which was No. 170. .He then informally greeted many of his friends who had assembled, and as hed rove away the crowd cheered him heartily. The M'Dowell House, Near Depot, Destroyed. The fire department iwas called out at a late hour last night by a blaze near the depot. The fire was found to be i use of his death other than I at the McDowell house, on the hill near Southside avenue, which has re cently been vacated (by -the family of Clarence Gresham. The fire was one of the most spec tacular one seen in Asheville of recent years. It had made too much headway for the firemen to check it, and the house wag totally destroyed. The origin of the fire could -not be learned. There was not much furniture in the house as it was uninhabited except by a negro who attended to it in the ab sence of the GreshEim family. Midnight esti mates indicate the ejection of Samuel W. Pennypacker governor of the state by 160,000 plurality over Robert E. Pat tison (dem.). Philadelphia county, the banner republican stronghold of the state, gives Pennypacker a plurality of 120,000 alpne and Senator Quay, the re publican leader, claims the state by 163,000. Pattison has carried appar ently only one ward in the whole city of Philadelphia. WEST VIRGINIA Wheeling, W. Va., Nov. 4. Returns coming in slowly indicate the certain election of B. R. Dovener, republican, for congress in the First district, 'by slightly reduced majority compared with 1900. In Second John T. McCraw claims his election over A. G. Dayton, republican, but the republicans do not concede. Wheeling, Nov. 4. Returns show the republicans have probably elected a solid delegation. The democrats, how ever, claim the election of McGraw, in the second district. The republicans will control the legislature on joint bal lot by 40 majority. Mrs. M. J. Danley, Treasurer of the Rebecca Lodee. I. O. O. Indications point to the election of a solid republican congres sional delegation. The democrats prac tically concede the defeat of Ex-Gov. Boise by Judge Birdsall, who succeeded Speaker Henderson on the republican ticket in the third district. The demo crats are claimine the election of their candidate to congress in the second dis trict, but indications point to victory for the republican candidates. Furthermore, it was funny, artistic and fascinating. The audience of 500 people listened with strict atten tion to the varied and novel songs of Miss Cameron. The leading lady is a remarkably vivacious creature. She answered the repeated encores with something new every time. The cho rus showed splendid discipline and sang with good voice. To be brief, the presentation will count as a top-notch- er among the several performances that have been held at the Auditorium Des Moines, ia., Nov. 4. At 9 o'clock the republican state committee esti mated their plurality in Ohio at more than 100,000, a gain of between 30,000 and 40',000 over last year. The demo cratic state committee makes no claims on the state ticket but claims a gain of congressmen. CONNECTICUT New Haven, Conn., Nov., 4. The early night returns on the vote for Governor in Connecticut show a re publican gain of thirtyfiive per cent indicating a republican plurality in the state of about 18,000.
